Did I ever tell you about the time the I held a hummingbird in my hand?I have. A living, breathing hummingbird. It flew in my back door and I thought it was once again a dragonfly. The big albatross like dragonflies come through the house often in the summer time.
When I went to retrieve it from the window ledge I saw it was an amazing little hummingbird and it just sat there while I picked it up and carried it outside. I could feel it's warmth in my hand but it had no weight. When I opened my hand up it just sat for half a second then it burst off into the sky. What a feeling that was. I am now one of the few people in the world who can say they have held a live hummingbird in their hands.
My beautiful glass hummingbird feeder broke this year. It was a gift from a friend. The glass was such a pretty color and it was shaped like a flower. I am now looking to find a new hummingbird feeder and I am checking out the selection at the Birdfeeders website.
If you want to attract hummingbirds or other birds to your property this is the place to look for information and products. I have never seen so many before.
If you are going to feed the birds you want to do it right. Did you know you can harm the hummingbirds if the feeder isn’t kept clean? I also learned that they don’t travel in flocks but are solitary travellers. They don’t all leave at once because like aircraft they would bump into each other. They can fly up to 500 miles non-stop in about 18-22 hours. The website has so much information. There is a lot to learn from them.
I don’t know about you but I am really impressed with these tenacious little birds and as I fill my new feeder I will do it with even more respect for them.
Birdfeeder.com is a sponsoring site.
I used to have so many hummingbirds at my feeders in Canada and I really got excited when they would drop by. Their beating wings sounded like buzzing bees. I have not seen one hummingbird in Florida and it could be that my attracting shrubs are not big enough yet. I put out a feeder but gave up. I remember reading about hummingbird torpor. I do the same every afternoon, so it is probably why I like them so much.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see a single hummingbird at my house this season. But what's worse, we were taking some stuff to the landfill & at the entrance where they weigh your car & all the junk, they have a little hummingbird feeder, a regular bird feeder & even a Wren house. So I asked the landfill attendant if they've had any hummingbirds yet & she said yes! Now that just sucks when the landfill gets hummingbirds before I do!
ReplyDeleteMy parents hung a HB feeder on their deck in Western Colorado, and it was the place where all the cool HBs hung out.
ReplyDeleteMorning coffee on the deck was delightful.
HBs came in a steady stream. There was the constant whirring/buzzing of their coming and going.
When I returned from my visit I hung a HB feeder in Northern Wisconsin. It sat lonely until it filled with ants. [shudder]
Spoilt the whole notion for me.
Next year we'll be paying some attention to the outside of our house; replacing trees lost in the hurrinado and doing a little planting.
I want (I want, I want, I want!) a bamboo wind chime and [now] another go at feeding the HBs.
Lovely post.
That is so cool. They are the cutest little things. I had one that zoomed through my garden every evening - I hope it returns this summer. ~ Robyn
ReplyDeleteHi Lori,
ReplyDeleteYour post makes me want a Hummingbird feeder..I can't believe that you caught one - how cool is that ! Lots of people around here have them...I don't know if we have any ones way out in the country....maybe I should try ! My hubby loves birds and we have a birdbath in the back. I love to see a Robin Redbreast splashing about...
Hugs ~ Kammy
p.s. We even have a store in town that sells nothing but outdoor bird stuff !
Thank you for the lovely comment.
ReplyDeleteAnd may I say....I love the turn that your writing is taking. Evocative, I think that I have used that word for your writings before. But I am loving the direction that your blog is going in. Very personable, and it is a joy to read.

I have seen hummingbirds, but not for many years -- how lucky you are! Great picture... Cass
ReplyDeleteThat must've been a wonderful sensation, to feel the hummingbird fly into freedom again. What a lucky girl!

What an amazing experience! I love hummingbirds, we've not had much luck attracting them so I'm going to check out the website. Thanks for the information! Kathy
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat for you. I know nothing of ornithology so this was a very interesting post. A lovely read.
ReplyDeleteThere really is something magical about hummingbirds I think.

ReplyDeleteThat's a nice story chick! I first saw a hummingbird up close at my paternal grandmother's house out on the Loch Lomond Road in Saint John, N.B. I was 12 at the time I think. She had a large bleeding heart plant growing outside her kitchen window. One summer day when we were visiting, my grandmother motioned to me and pointed at the window, putting a finger to her lips. I looked and there it was....it was one of those with the reddish throats and iridescent back. You couldn't see the wings, they were going so quick! I guess he (I assume it was a he) was visiting my grandmother's flowers for nectar.
