EVERYBODY DANCE NOW

How many of you grew up watching Soul Train or American Bandstand?

Did you race home from school to catch the “cool” kids bustin’ a move to the latest hot bands?

Did you practice those moves until you could boogie with the best of them? Did you wish you were doing the Soul Train Boogie Walk?

WERE YOU EVER ON ONE OF THOSE SHOWS YOURSELF?  My brother in law was on Bandstand once. I wish I had a video of that one.

One of my favourite TV shows that was on from 2002 to 2005 was American Dreams where the main character, a young girl played by Brittany Snow, used to go to Bandstand every day after school.The music for Bandstand was recreated using current bands portraying the originals. The soundtrack was fabulous. This show was also a great history lesson for us showing what the race riots were all about. I was very sad to see it go.

So what are your Bandstand or Soul Train memories? The host of Soul Train, Don Cornelius, sadly shot himself last night at the age of 75.

DANCING ALL NIGHT = GOOD TIMES

You know you have had a good time when you dance the whole night. We went to a barbecue at a friends home last night and really had a good time. 
It was in the most interesting location...a Manhattan style apartment in an industrial area. No one would ever know it it even there. It is above their business and I wish I had pictures for you but alas I thought that wouldn't be appropriate. 
We had a barbecue of steaks and salmon that were mouth watering and we all brought side dishes. So many interesting salads. I especially enjoyed a cucumber mint salad. 

 It was perfect for such a hot night. We have been enjoying a bit of a heat wave here and we are not used to it. 

There was a live band playing mostly songs from the 60's (no...not the actual Kinks but lots of this kind of music which those of us of a certain age can relate to ....and dance to all night long) which is right up my alley as I have my own DJ show on Blip.fm that I fill with the great tunes from that era. The warehouse doors were open wide and we were dancing outside. They did play other stuff too but really that was the stuff that got us moving. We danced and sang all the words. My throat was sore the next morning from singing so much. Lol. 
We had so many laughs and such a good time.We  got home about 1:30 in the morning.

WHAT WERE THE PARENTS THINKING?

There is a video clip of a dance troupe who are performing Beyonce's song Single Ladies. You can see it HERE on Anderson Cooper, CNN.  They are really good dancers. They have worked hard to learn this routine I am sure. There were probably many rehearsals. I am sure many of their parents were involved in the process. Involved in the costumes. So here is my question...

WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?

These little girls are 7 years old and they are gyrating in skimpy costumes. This has been filmed and put on YouTube.  I am just stunned that none of the parents put a stop to this. 

Hip Hop dancing is a great style and can be age appropriate. There are many songs they could have chosen that would not be so sexual.

Now I know I have put up a link for you to see this. Have you ever come across a situation that required you to step in and put a stop to it? Have you ever pulled your kids out of something because of the inappropriate things going on?

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA

So I told you a while back about Miss Tara Jean Popowich competing on So You Think You Can Dance Canada.Click here to see that post.
Well I am happy to say that she is just rocking the competition. The judges love her, what is not to love she can dance the feet off of anyone, but the public is also loving her. 
Tonight she made it through to the top two females and is in the top 4 all around. So if she makes it through the next round she is the top female dancer. I have never watched this before so I don't know if they make the top guy and girl compete at the end for number one or if there is one of each. Either way Tara Jean is a champion. You go girl.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE "CANADA"

So I know you probably don't watch the Canadian version of this show but wanted to crow about one of our Canadian contestants. This is Tara Jean Popowich from Lethbridge, Alberta. I have never watched the show before but when I found out she was on there from my niece I tuned in. My niece is out of the country right now so I have to watch so I can update her.

I met Tara Jean only once when she came to watch her brother's hockey game one night in a Vancouver suburb. She was teaching dance at the time at a well known, elite dance studio in the downtown Vancouver area.

My niece and her husband billet hockey players for the Cowichan Capitols team every year in their Vancouver Island home and when they come to the Mainland to play I always go and watch mostly just to visit with family who always come with the team.

This particular night Tara Jean and a friend had taken several buses and a rapid transit train to get to this suburb just to watch her brother play hockey. It took them a couple hours to get to the ice rink and they really didn't even know where they had ended up but they found the rink.

Being the local person at the game my niece asked if I could get them back to the train so they could get downtown. It was about 11:00 pm and of course I would give them a ride. I remember thinking how tiny and young these girls were. The fact that they were living on their own in Vancouver at age 18, working on a dream was really amazing to me. I took them the Sky Train station that would get them directly where they wanted to go and I worried and worried that they would get there safely. Forget the fact that it was a Friday night and they were probably heading out to party somewhere once they got back into town. I just think like a mom.

Any way Tara Jean is doing great on the show and the judges love her. I wish her the best.
