A BOY AND HIS GROCERIES

I went to get groceries last night after work. I had a cart full of stuff, most of it healthy. Lots of fruits and vegies, yoghurt, cereals, you get the picture.

A young man about 20-23 got in line behind me and put his items on the conveyor belt. I almost laughed out loud for real, not the LOL kind but the out of place snort kind.

This is what this young man had picked up. He had a rotisserie chicken (so did I)

About 6 packets of Kool-Aid.

A package of mini cupcakes all iced up pretty.

A loaf of white Wonder bread.

And last but not least a Lima bean type deli salad. I kid you not.

I guess he thought his breath might need a little help later, maybe this was dinner for a hot date. He grabbed a packet of gum. Impulse item.

I think I smiled about this all the way home.

PORK IN VINDALOO SAUCE

This recipe is from the cookbook by Madhur Jaffrey, Indian Cooking. There are a lot of ingredients but if you organize them the recipe is quite easy.

The ingredients for Indian cooking are pure art. I love the look. I love the smell. I love the textures. Fennel, black mustard, cinnamon, peppercorns, cumin, hot chilies.

Garlic and ginger.

Turmeric and ground coriander.

Cubed pork

I threw in some corn kernels.

HOME MADE SALSA

This is a repeat of a post from last year but the time is right to make another batch.
Designs by Gollum is our host for Foodie Friday. Always a favorite. Our family are probably the most excited about this meme because all the great food ideas trickle down to our dinner tables. Join us there and see what is going on in our kitchens.
My friends picked up a flat of tomatoes for me last weekend. We love tomatoes but it became clear very quickly that we couldn't eat enough of them fresh so I decided to make salsa. Here they are all chopped up and lightly salted with pickling salt. They are raised up on a tray so they can drain most of their liquids out.
Have you ever peeled tomatoes? It is quite a interesting process. Bring a pot of water to a boil and put in some tomatoes. After 1-2 minutes lift them out and drop them into a sink full of cold water and BAM the peels will slide right off in your hands. Slippery though so hang on to them.
I ended up with a dozen jars of salsa full of tomatoes, onions, jalepenos and sweet peppers. There is also a healthy dose of cumin thrown in. Each jar gets about 3 tablespoons of lime juice to help with the acidity so the food stays safe to eat after a full processing time.

MOVE OVER BLUEBERRIES

Move over blueberries. You have lost top billing as one of the best foods for antioxidants. Yes they are still an amazing little fruit so full of live giving antioxidants that is would make our heads spin. We still love their sweet taste that is like no other.
The new kid on the block is now black rice. Yup. It is that lovely little black grain that turns purple when you cook it. It is bursting with iron, fiber and anthocyanin antioxidants. Anthocyanin antioxidants are found to be promising in the reduction of cancers, heart disease and bad cholesterol. All this in a spoonful of rice. Sounds like something I can get behind.

A spoonful of the rice has more of these benefits than a spoonful of blueberries and is much more affordable and available year round.

FOODIE FRIDAY - FARMER'S MARKET FINDS

I went to a new local farmer's market on Sunday and it was pretty good. 

There were several vendors down there and we hope for more. The crowds sure showed up. It was nice to run into so many locals that I know. There were 4 people from my coffee group to start with. Then there were many that I hadn't seen in years. I even saw a few of my senior computer students. It always makes me happy to see them out and about keeping busy and enjoying life.

The first thing I grabbed were some organic free range eggs. When I had some for breakfast the next day I cracked one open to see two lovely yolks in the one egg. Mmm mmm good. 

 The bread stall had run out of nearly everything that day. I was lucky to get a baguette and a multi grain loaf. There were also pies and jams and jellies. Pickled asparagus and beans.

The one vegetable stall sells fabulous garlic and they were giving every customer a free giant clove of the hottest garlic I have ever tasted. I loved it scrubbed on some toasted baguette with some brie cheese. 

 This area is built along our river front. The town homes were built in a brownstone style and when it all grows in it will look lovely. 

 I had planned to open a gift ware store down there when they first started building the area but they got bogged down for years and I decided against it. 
 Too bad though because it is an interesting area for sure. 

Look at the petunia that was growing in a pot outside the florist's shop. I have never seen one like that before. 

There was also music, a clown for the kids, lots of dogs. I look forward to the next one.
