SPEAK ENGLISH WOULD YOU

I received this in an email today and thought I would share it. I seem to vaguely remember George Carlin doing a routine like this.

You think English is easy???

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.

2) The farm was used to produce produce.

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present

8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) I did not object to the object.

11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row ...

13) They were too close to the door to close it.

14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.

15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.

19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people not computers and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why when the stars are out they are visible but when the lights are out they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick' ?

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP'

It's easy to understand UP , meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report ?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UPexcuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP . We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP ! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP ,you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP .. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP ...

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.

When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP .

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP , for now my time is UP , so........it is time to shut UP !

Oh . . . one more thing:

What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U-P

TAG AND I AM IT: 10 THINGS ABOUT ME

Okay we all know the drill. I have been tagged by Jane @ Key Lime Berry to tell you 10 things about me. Doesn't matter if you are interested or not. Jane said I have to do it. Sorry.
I have written 25 things you might not know about me before and you can read them here. I will now try for 10 new things about me that will be irresistibly entertaining and or thought provoking.
  1. I am French and Metis. I have done my family history back to the late 1500's and have only included people who I have a source for my information. When I was growing up my mother was not interested in having us know about the Aboriginal part of our heritage. It was not something they were proud of in her day and they were mistreated because of it. I am proud.
  2. I have so many projects going at one time but I sometimes take years to finish something. I have been working on a huge Father Christmas cross stitch for about 4 years now. I have many more waiting to be opened. At least I have stopped buying more. They are all of Father Christmas
  3. I collect the old fashioned Santas/ Father Christmas. I don't like the Coke style or the cutesy ones. They need to be unusual and or folk arty. I have almost 100. I also paint some and this is my favorite one that I painted below. Yes I did that and I am proud of it too.
  4. I really wish I had an opportunity to go to university when I was younger. We lived on welfare and the school counselors didn't bother to advise us "kids from the projects" that you could get scholarships, part time jobs, bursaries, etc. to go to school. We basically didn't bother nor were we encouraged to go in to the academic classes like algebra or biology. I did take cooking and sewing though. Woo hoo. I thought you had to be a millionaire to go to university. Would I bother to go now at age 52? Nah, I am happy with who I am now. Who needs to take on that kind of work at this point?
  5. I have really good instincts about people and make up my mind about them in minutes. I haven't been wrong so far. I get a vibe from them and know right away they are not who they seem to be. Good thing I don't say "I told you so" all the time.
  6. I would like to be a kick @$$ fighter like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. I would like to tune up some people who really have it coming. I would only use my skills on the real creeps. Really. I promise. Send me names and I will see what I can do.
  7. I see things as really black and white. You know what is right and what isn't. You can't just change the facts around to excuse your behavior. "You are entitled to your own opinions but you are not entitled to your own facts".
  8. I talk trash while driving my car. Not road rage but lots of Hey moron get going (okay and worse stuff) sort of talk and not so they know it. I just babble it to myself or my passenger.
  9. I make fun of almost everything. There is always a chuckle or a joke running through my head when people speak. I know better than to always spit it out but you can bet it is in there in my head...my inside voice. Usually my filter works. Usually.
  10. I am a pretty loyal person. I have been with my husband for 34 years. I still have friends from high school. People tell me their deepest darkest secrets and they know I will keep my mouth shut. I am trustworthy. I like that.

Well you all know what comes next don't you. I need to tag some people to get this monkey off my back meme on it's way.
I look forward to learning more about you ladies.

MOSAIC MONDAY- IT'S NOT THERE?

I see that Mary from Little Red House is not around for hosting Mosaic Monday this week. Too bad because I already made up my mosaics for the week. What to do, what to do?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most of you know I was on Vancouver Island last week visiting family. I stayed with my sister and brother in law and as usual was treated like a queen. They have worked so hard on their beautiful garden and I wanted to share it with all of you.
They built this house and started the garden from a blank slate. The amount of work my brother in law has done is astounding. That is my room on the right. Ya I know they let other people stay there but really it is my room. My bro in law did all the brickwork above. That is a raised veggie bed on the top right. There is a bird living in the planters in the top middle picture and on the left is the back view of their water feature that entices the birds to bathe.
They have a potting shed which gets lots of use and also hides the lawn mowers to the side of it behind the lattice work. The entire back of the property is planted with wonderful tree specimens many of which were very small when planted. They are now tall and full. Most of the garden is edged with a concrete curb.
My brother in law lugged every one of those rocks home and placed them one by one up the little slope to the back deck and the house. Truck load after truck load. I get tired just thinking about it. This rockery is home to a real variety of plants, japanese maples, poppies, grasses, lilies, irises, coreopsis to name a few.
There are so many different special spots in the garden, one more lovely than the next. I think one of my favorites is the bench at the side of the house.
There is a fantastic view from everywhere in their yard. Just look at the mountains. They grow some pretty delicious veggies every year. Tomatoes, zucchini, beans, squash, garlic, cucumbers and some others too.
I have told you before about holding a hummingbird in my hands but I am not alone. My brother in law has held one that flew into his garage. They have a lot of them in their yard. Can you see the little one on the honeysuckle vine? Click on the picture to enlarge it. See him. We were only about 3 feet away but he didn't care. Here is a front view of the little fountain. Boy the birds love that trickling water. There is a non stop flow of them splashing and drinking.
I have to tell you there is not a weed to be found in this yard nor are there any dead blossoms hanging around waiting to be dead headed. Not on his watch! I love their garden and I think they do to. They should be very proud of all their hard work.
This post was originally done on March 22, 2009. This is not the same sister who's house I was just staying at on Vancouver Island.
I received a long distance phone call this morning from one of my sisters. She told me to turn on the local news and have a look at my "weapon of choice".
What did I see there. An old Electrolux vacuum cleaner of course.
She sure has a long memory. Many, many, many years ago when I was about 4 or 5 years old, in self defense I am sure, I took the metal pipe from my Mom's vacuum and whacked her across the head with it.
I was just a tiny little girl but apparently I had enough muscle to swing that sucker pretty good.
She ran to our Mom's room and woke her from a nap. Mom wasn't happy about the wake up but when she saw the size of the goose egg on my sister's forehead she let out an "OMG".
Now in my defense I must say she must have done something to deserve this because I have never hit anyone since. I also don't remember this so I have to take her word for it.
Mom did what they did in those days...she taped a huge coin tightly to it to try to
keep the swelling down. No doctors, no Children's Aid, no clinic.
By the way this same sister used to double me on the back of her bike and she would go so fast I would scream and scream. That I do remember. See I told you she probably deserved it.
LUNCH IN SIDNEY, B.C.
We had a lovely lunch with my MIL and our SIL at this ocean side restaurant in Sidney, British Columbia. Unfortunately my husband's brother was busy and couldn't make it. It was short notice because we didn't know when we would get there until the night before and when talking to my MIL we understood she was calling him to see if he was available. That call didn't get made and in the end we phoned 10 minutes before we were going for lunch. It was obvious I didn't organize this this trip.
There is a walkway that goes all along the ocean
We didn't have time for dessert at the restaurant. My MIL had a fruit flan at home and wanted us to come there but what would take 20 minutes most places at her home would take well over an hour. There just wasn't time. We treated ourselves with gelato at the ferry terminal. We had no idea the scoops would be so big (that's my story and I'm sticking to it) so we order two scoops. I had a cappuccino and a chocolate mint and my BB had strawberry and amaretto. Ohhhhh baby this stuff is good. Not much left of his by the time I took the picture.
A TRIP TO VANCOUVER ISLAND
Swartz Bay Ferry Termial
I had the opportunity to go to Vancouver Island with my BB guy who had to make the trek for work. The ferries are an inconvenience at best for the people who live here, an expensive one at that. When you are a tourist it can be a beautiful trip full of eagles, whales, dolphins, mountains and ocean. After you have done the trip many times over the years you dread the awful food(depending on whether or not the dining room is open), the sometimes half day lineups, the expense and the crowds. On the way over I didn't even take any pictures because it was a gray, rainy day. On the way home we did get to appreciate the touristy side of the trip because it was a beautiful day.
We had made a reservation, for a fee, to get on the 4:00 sailing back to the mainland. This saved us from perhaps missing a sailing and having to wait for the next one. It is a 2 1/2 hour ride so it does get quite late before you get home.This wasn't the ideal situation because it meant we had to cut our lunch and visit with my mother in law short to get to the boat by 3:30 check in for reservations. We had wanted a later sailing but they were already reserved. Remember this was the first Friday since school let out and we have a national holiday coming up on July 1 in Canada. The scenery is spectacular for sure. We sat outside for most of the trip but a jacket was necessary for me. The sun was warm but the wind out on the open ocean is really strong and cold. The pleasure boats were out everywhere and the float planes were landing at the waterfront home all along the way. Now that would be a fabulous commute home from work wouldn't it? Note: the photos of the whale was not taken by me. It is from wikepedia. This is one of the best whale watching areas in the world and it is not unusual to see these magnificent animals on you ferry crossing. I didn't want you to miss out on them.
LAST DAY ON THE ISLAND
Well I will be heading home today but first we will be stopping in at Capitol Iron. This is a really cool store in Victoria. I will try to get pictures. Then we will pick up my mother in law for lunch and have a visit with her. I can only imagine how bad the ferry lineups will be on a Friday afternoon now the school is out for the year.
I look forward to seeing more of your blogs when I get home.
RANDOM: Three Or More Tuesdays
My dear little farm animals. 1 2 3 Every year they welcome people to my porch. Well most of the time. Sometimes it just says WEL OME because the C keeps coming out of its staple. It is pretty brittle so I don't want to mess with it too much but I will have to do something to keep it in this year. Maybe some glue.
In the meantime WEL OME to my Blog.
VISITING
B.C. FerriesImage by BillFromSpokane via Flickr
I am heading out for a few days to visit one of my sisters. I will be taking a ferry to Vancouver Island. I love going there because they make me coffee and feed me and take me places.
I have a scheduled post and I may post from the island too unless I am lying in a stupor on her patio chairs with a cocktail in my hand. I will definitely pop into your blogs for visits though and will check my email.
Talk to you soon.
JEAN LALONDE DIT ESPERANCE
Jean Lalonde dit Esperance was my 8th great grandfather. He was born about 1641 in Rouen, Normandie, France. He married in New France (Quebec)November 14, 1669 to Marie Barbary
Quebec City - Port St. LouisImage by David Paul Ohmer via Flickr
(Barbant) who was a Filles du Roi. It is said that Marie had a dowry of 200 livres. These women came to New France to marry and help populate the new land. This was arranged and sponsored by Louis XIV.
Jean died September 30, 1687 in an attack by the Iroquois on the little parish of St. Louis. He was the lone churchwarden of the area. I have found four children from this marriage.
I found the wine label above on the internet. It marked the 300 year anniversary of Jean's death. The photo was credited to Labatts Brewery. I contacted the company and they directed me to the archivist for Labatts. She said to email her the picture and she would see what she could find but I never heard back from her.
THREE OR MORE TUESDAY
Tam at The Gypsy's Corner is our hostess for Three Or More Tuesday. She always has such a successful theme. This week she combined two together and the pictures are beautiful. This is definitely the year for decorating with shells and starfish. Drop by to see all the posts for this Tuesday. Leave a comment, join in. Thanks for coming by.
Some time ago we went to a wedding about 5 hours away from where we live. While out for a drive my BB guy stopped to take pictures of these lovely horses pastured by the road. They were very happy to see him and came right over to see if he that camera he had in his hands was something to eat. No luck for them but great pictures for us.
They just lined up as if they were told what to do. Nice cooperative horsies.
Horse thieves are hanged aren't they? I thought so. Sorry guys you can't come home with us.
BIRTHDAY BASKETS
We were attending a double birthday party on Saturday night. I must say I was inspired by all the lovely tablescapes you ladies always create when it came to the gifts. I made up two baskets with a black & white theme.
I started with black woven place mats and added two clear rippled dinner plates and two salad plates. I used black and white dish towels as giant napkins. There was a bottle of wine for each of them and two stemless glasses. A nice Malbec for one and a bubbly Proseco for the other.I found pretty white frosted candle holders with white lettering. I put two special chocolate mousse truffles in the little black boxes tied with white ribbons. The wine bottles went into special black wine gift boxes with a cut out front for the label. I set this on a bed of white and gold shredded filler into the white trays and wrapped it all up with a black patterned cellophane. The card hung on the outside was a pretty swirled black and white card stock on which I wrote with a white pen. Last but not least was each ladies initial done in wood hanging on the outside with the white and black polka dot ribbon.
Apparently the offer to cook them dinners was the only thing missing from these gifts.
