WRITER'S CHALLENGE #3 - TEACHERS IN OUR LIFE
Remember we are not looking for a professional paper but a story you can share with the same relaxed attitude you show us on your everyday blog posts. We don't grade your paper. So here is the topic for our next Writer's Challenge. You can read the first challenge here and the second one here. You can see what others wrote by clicking on their links at the bottom of those posts.
TEACHERS WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE
GOOD OR BAD
What teacher made a difference in your life? Was it a positive experience or a negative one? Did they make you even more determined to succeed? Or did they stamp out the spark?
We will present these stories on January 15th. I will put up a Mr. Linky list for you to join in. If you don't know how to use it just email me and I will explain how to link your story up to the list. Pretty simple really.
Don't have a blog but want to join in? You can email me your story and I will post it on here for you.
POST CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS
The Christmas dinner is over, the Boxing Day party has come to an end and I think it was pretty much a success all the way around.
I was lucky this year to have one of my sisters here with her husband. We at least got to talk to our other sister on the phone. My brother...I have no idea. Two out of three ain't bad.
The dinner was right on time having done a lot of prep work ahead of time. It was delicious if I do say so myself. We all ate a little too much going back for seconds.
We were all feeling great with the exception of one of my sons who had to leave the table part way through due to a case of what we figured was food poisoning, not picked up at my table I must add. Five out of six people healthy ain't bad.
The gifts were wonderful. All of us were very lucky and received many nice things. Only one gift was not a keeper. One out of many ain't bad.
On Boxing Day we had many people come by. It was a fun day and evening full of laughs and food. I made many appetizers and trays. Everything tasted fabulous with the exception of the stuffed mushrooms which were terrible. One out of dozens ain't bad.
We had about 30 people come over throughout the open house. There were others who were invited that were not likely to come but only one couple that had confirmed had to back out. Two out of 32 ain't bad.
We had a wonderful Christmas and Boxing Day. 100% and that ain't bad.
How about you? Was Santa good to you? Did you get to see family and friends? Did you feel the peace, love and joy of the season? I hope so.

SANTA COLLECTION - A WHOLE BUNCH
I have added a bunch of my Santa collection all at once. I don't know which ones I have shown and which I haven't. There were at least 10 of the postcards and I am sure I didn't post all of them either. Unfortunately this year I have had two breakages. Both by the dog and both on the console table. What can I say. She has a happy tail. I have also include a birdhouse that I painted. The white Santa next is one I painted that was a cross stitch pattern first.

These photos are especially fabulous. Remember you can view them full screen to see them better. There are quite a few of them. This is probably my last post before Christmas so I want to wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas. Enjoy.

RULES TO LIVE BY
Holiday Eating Tips
1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday
buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit.
In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately.
Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.
2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly.
Like fine single-malt scotch, it's rare. In fact, it's even
rarer than single-malt scotch. You can't find it any other time
of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories
in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an
eggnog-aholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it.
Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think.
It's Christmas!
3. If something comes with gravy, use it.
That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone.
Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes.
Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with
skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother?
It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to
control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is
to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between
now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you
have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll
need after circling the buffet table while carrying
a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table,
like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa,
position yourself near them and don't budge.
Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention.
They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind,
you're never going to see them again.
8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each.
Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin.
Always have three. When else do you get to have
more than one dessert? Labor Day?
9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the
mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost.
I mean, have some standards.
10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the
party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention.
Reread tips; start over, but hurry,
January is just around the corner.

SANTA COLLECTION #49, #50, #51
In person this piece looks quite old but it isn't. The crank is just for decoration. He doesn't really move or pop up.
I painted this one.
If this guy was straight instead of sitting he would be about 18 to 20 inches tall.

DO YOU STILL BELIEVE IN SANTA?
When did you stop believing in Santa Claus? Or do you still believe? Did you tell your kids early in life so they were not being lied to or like my sons do they have to still (ages 22 & 26) believe if they want presents.
I stopped believing at about age 6. I received a doll that year with brown hair and brown eyes. I found her behind the couch. Obviously something was going on here. I was pretty smart so I knew it came from my parents.
I have no memory of thinking Santa was coming. No memory of being told I had to be good or he wouldn't come at all. Sadly some years there was barely anything there at all. I do remember my mother, alone by this time, waiting to see if we would get a Christmas hamper on Christmas Eve. Most years I believe we did. I don't remember getting toys other than the year I was in grade 2. We each got a gift, mine being a beauty shop, my brother got the game Lie Detector and my sister got the game Concentration I think. (she can correct me on that one)
Here we are with the game my sister got that year. I am the one in the background pretending to smoke a cigarette. We are so adorable.
So tell me when you stopped believing. Was it so traumatic that you are still not able to talk about it? Did you destroy every shred of trust between you and your children?

Beautiful British Columbia
Just wanted to share a photo of one of our most beautiful creatures. This whale is performing for some of our British Columbia RCMP boats. Now this is a good day at work.
RANDOM THOUGHTS - THOUGH NOT MINE ORIGINALLY
Random Thoughts
1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.
2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.
3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.
4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.
5. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?
6. Was learning cursive really necessary?
7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on #5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.
8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.
9. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least KIND OF tired.
10. Bad decisions make good stories.
11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.
12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don't want to have to restart my collection...again.
13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.
14. "Do not machine wash or tumble dry" means I will never wash this -- ever.
15. I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Damn it!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voice-mail. What did you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away?
16. I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.
17. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.
18. My 4-year old son asked me in the car the other day "Mom what would happen if you ran over a ninja?" How the hell do I respond to that?
19. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.
20. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lites than Kay.
Now keep in mind these were not written by me but are just being passed on for a little light humor.

ATTA GIRL AWARD - LOU @ THE QUIET LIFE
Now Lou when you post this award I would appreciate it if you would make sure this award links back to here so others can give it out too. This way I can add the recipients to the list.
It doesn't matter if you give it to anyone else and there are no requirements or lists to do. Just post it proudly because you really do deserve it.
If there someone out there that any of you think deserve this award feel free to pass it on but you must ask them to also link back here with the picture so we can carry it on. Oh yes and tell me who so I can add them to the list.
BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FUNDRAISER
I am posting this information that I received in an email. I can't vouch for any of it but enjoy the video and if it raises money for this cause all the better.
Emily (MacInnes) Somers, created, directed and choreographed this inPortland for her Medline glove division as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. This was all her idea to help promote their new pink gloves.
When the video gets 1 million hits, Medline will be making a huge contribution to the hospital, as well as offering free mammograms for the community. Please check it out. It's an easy and great way to donate to a wonderful cause, and who hasn't been touched by breast cancer?

SECRET SANTA GIFTS
How many of you participate in one of those Secret Santa gift exchanges at work? How do you decide what to give to someone you hardly know or don't even like?
What is the worst gift you have ever received at one of these things? Have you given something to someone and then later regretted your choice.
Did anyone ever give you or someone else something completely inappropriate, mean or stupid?
Did you get the boss' name and then suck up with a gift over the price limit set. Casually let it slip that it was you who got their name?
Do tell.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS AWARD #2
I have been invited into another Circle of Friends and it feels good. Dupree @ chlorine in the gene pool sent this my way. He is a fellow Gleek and has a great sense of humor too. Apparently he likes fine wine and lots of laughs so I think we would get along great. I wouldn't be happy until I made the wine come out his nose though.
I will send this on to others in the new year when you are less busy.
Thanks again Dupree.
WE WILL SELF DESTRUCT AT THE BUZZER
I gotta tell you I am getting a little paranoid around here. Things have been self destructing on a regular basis. I know things get old and wear out (oh gosh how I know) but this is getting on my nerves.
When we renovated the kitchen several years ago we replaced the dishwasher and microwave but kept the fridge and stove because they were fine.
A bit before that we had to get a new washer and dryer when they quit. Now the bleach/soap/softener dispenser only dispenses some of the time and the handle broke off of the dryer.
Well we replaced the fridge finally a couple years ago. So far so good.(shhh don't say anything)
This past November we replaced the stove that had many issues.

The handle on the microwave broke off so now we pull it open by digging our fingers up under the bottom of the door and pulling.
Now don't get me wrong. Those appliances had held up a long time. It is just that when it rains it pours. Oh ya, forgot to mention we have a leaky roof and will have to replace it this spring when the weather permits...and the bank account.
SANTA COLLECTION #46 & #47
These are two more that I painted. There is a lot of glare on the one picture, sorry.
I figured I had better start to double up on the photos to get them all in before Christmas.

I am combining two memes today because I wanted to do both. I know, I 'm a rebel but that is just how I roll.
First we have Mosaic Monday. This is hosted by Mary @ Little Red House and then Metamorphosis Monday hosted by Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch. Oh I forgot about Deck the Halls with Susan @ Thoughts From Over the Rainbow.
You will love all the different blogs out there that participate in these themes. Join in. Everyone is welcome, but please leave a comment here before you move on.

I forgot to take a photo of the mantle before it was decorated so I am using this one from our friends surprise party last month. Off came the Fall wreath and up went the fabric and ribbon. On top of that are the evergreen branches. A mix of ornaments, candles and topped with a pre-lit wreath and there is the metamorphosis.
Then on to the tree. It is about 7 feet tall and artificial because I leave it up for over a month.
I use white lights and a mix of ornaments all in shades of burgundy, copper, gold and cream. I use a minimal amount of thick gold tinsel. Just enough to make the tree shimmer. My lights have many settings but I keep them on fade where they fade in and out randomly again giving the tree some life. Looks great in person but is a pain to photograph. Glad you stopped by. Make sure to visit the host blogs and all of the other participants. Oh ya, join in. Don't know how? Ask any of us because we are all happy to help.
