After reading about Jo's dog getting swatted by a cat @ Cornish Beach Brummie it reminded me of our own furry fisticuffs.
We had our cat, Alvin for 18 years. We got our dog, Maxine when the cat was an adult.
The cat was not impressed with this Labrador puppy and made it very clear to said pup to stay away.
This point was driven across by a flurry of swipes at the pups head. I cleaned up the spray of blood off the walls and told the puppy to stay away.
Now we all know puppies are stupid. Cute yes but stupid in the ways of life. So back she would go to sniff at the cat. The cat would smack down the dogs face again and I would clean up the blood from the walls and floor. No puppy, no.
Now this scenario went on for a year or so. Every few days the dog would stick her nose where it really didn't belong and the bloodletting would begin anew.
Gradually the cat stopped using the claws and just pummeled the the dog with his paws. Finally after many, many years the dog could stick her nose right into the cat's butt to the point of lift off and the cat would just walk away. I think he got to liking it.

Note: these are not my actual pet's photos. They are very close facsimiles. I don't have any photos of them on my laptop and quite frankly I am too lazy too go downstairs and scan some pictures.
So in the end (all puns intended) it was a win win situation!
ReplyDeleteWhen we adopted Lil' Bob a full grown 4 pound dog, I didn't know what Eugene, the Maine Coon cat would do. I worried about the Chihuahua eyes etc. Eugene is so huge, easily 4 times Bob's weight and size.
ReplyDeleteI think it is amusing for the cat as he has never even attempted to hurt Bob. They play together all the time. Weird.
Different I think, each clever in different ways. Cats will learn easily what benefits them while dogs will usually learn whatever pleases their 'master'.
ReplyDeleteOh CATS win by a mile. No questions, after all.
ReplyDeleteDogs have masters, CATS have servants.
Bootsie wanted me to tell you all this.

This is all so true - Fred really just keeps going to 'talk' to that same cat after each walk - Dogs just never learn! LOL - Thanks for stopping by and the lovely mention, Lori E, xoxo Jo
ReplyDeleteThat puppy is just darling. Cat's win the brain game in MHO.
ReplyDeleteWell total dog lover here but man they can be dumber than dirt. Remember this video from the other week. http://joanne55.blogspot.com/2009/07/things-that-make-me-giggle-thursday.html
ReplyDeleteAs the T shirt says "the Egyptians worshipped cats. Cats remember this" I'm currently owned by a 13 pound black-and-white mog who is demanding in the extreme. Due to his cuteness, he has me well-trained to his needs :-) Jo
