Not many people can say their father was a professional wrestler. Although he was only 5 feet tall my dad was for a brief period a champion. I wasn't born yet but one of my sisters was and she remembers it well. She remembers lots of the wrestlers coming to the house in Vancouver. She remembers the big celebration of the championship. There were lady wrestlers there too. All we have is this photo to chronicle this time in his life along with her memories. With all the research I do and the records from the 1600's I can find you would think there would be something available from the 1950's. Nada. Nothing. Very frustrating. Make sure you find out the stories in your family. Write them down. Someday someone will be looking for them.
note: don't be mislead by the date on the left of the photo. It says 1963 but that is when the copy of the picture was made not the original.

GREAT POST! what a neat thing to find out about your family. It makes me wonder if I would find anything exciting if I were to look
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you have at least one photo of him from that time.
ReplyDeleteLucy I liked this one. No one would want to dig up my family tree roots. Too gnarled and infested.

Hi Sheri
ReplyDeletethat was interesting and look at the tats he is sporting...
Did he continue to be interested in fitness in later life...
Happy days
Wow! A wrestler! So did he have one of those cool wrestler monikers like "The Mighty Meatgrinder" or "Ricky Steamboat" or something like that??
ReplyDeleteHis wrestling name was Frenchy. How original. He did have a lot of old dark tattoos. He never did anything else athletic.
ReplyDeleteBTW I'm Lori not Sheri lol.
Oh Lori I so agree. Act before it is too late. My father would write poetry and recite them at all the family get-togethers. Problem was that he never wrote them down. They were all in his head. We tried for years to get he to write them down and he just would not do it.
ReplyDeleteWe resorted to hiding a tape recorder and pestering him to recite to get them on tape to be transcribed by someone else. Regrettably, we were never able to get them all on tape before he died suddenly. Thank heavens for the few we do have.
Thank you so much for the lovely comment on my Sabbatical post. I hope that you will pop around occasionally for more.
Hi Lori
ReplyDeleteplease excuse my lapse in concentration...der...
Happy days
Hi Lori...
ReplyDeleteMy friend, what a sweet and interesting post that you have shared with all of us today for Sunday Favorites! So happy that you joined in with the fun again this week!!!
Wow...so your dad was a professional wrestler...that is awesome!!! You know...what you wrote is so true...we need to be writing these family stories down!!! My Sis started a couple years ago...researching our family history...I am amazed at the information she has found! It's so interesting!!! She made a notebook up for me...with all this information...I don't know how many pages it is (right off-hand) but it's about 3in. thick! We are getting ready to go a family reunion..the 2nd one to be organized and I'm taking my family history book! I hope to get some of the old family photos labeled and intend on writing down all the stories that I hear!!! It's so important...some day my kiddos will appreciate having all of this I think...or at least, I hope!
Thanks again, my friend...for sharing a little of your family history with us today!
Warmest wishes,
Chari
How frikken cool. Yes I am getting my mom to label all her pics (to the best of her ability). So we both had athletic dad's - my dad was semi-pro baseball. He was signed by St Louis in the late 40's and got a whopping $450 signing bonus. He never did go - his dad got sick and he remained home - thank goodness he wouldn't have met my mom otherwise.
ReplyDeleteLori, I just wanted to stop by and personally thank you for stopping by my blog and for the prayers sent out to my little nephew Keegan. He came home from the hospital yesterday late afternoon. He is weak but doing well. Again we all thank everyone for all of their kind words, and prayers. Merry Christmas, Sue
