Here as promised are some pictures from my trip to the berry farm today.
We went to
Krause Berry Farms in Langley, B.C. It was a fabulous sunny day and we met at Zenberry for coffee at 9:00. This is our usual meeting place Monday to Friday for our coffee group. We sometimes go on road trips to interesting places that for some reason always include food.
I zipped over the new bridge and my transponder chirped for the very first time with the joy of it's first $2.75 charge. If you knew what the traffic on the old route was like you would see what a deal this is. Shaves off close to an hour of driving in heavy traffic.
This is the garden bed when you are heading to the buildings from the parking lot. This is also a U-pick farm but I am not the berry picking type. First off I would eat more than I would put into the bucket. That would necessitate my being weighed on the way in and out of the fields. Let's just say that ain't gonna happen. Note that they do have strict rules about eating in the fields.

This is the main building and store. They sell fruit smoothies, shakes, lattes, corn pizza whatever that is? I hope there is some left for us.

A little Q&A. Unfortunately I didn't look at the other side but now I figure that is where the answers to these important questions must have been.

Like all farms nowadays they have a gift shop too. Although the farm store was out of strawberries today (unless you went and picked) the shelves were full of strawberry accessories.

They have an interesting variety of pancake mixes and berry syrups. Note the cute little strawberry hats. Say awwwww. Come on.

They sell frozen pies but my eyes were glued to these fresh berry pies. Too bad we were in a hot car and would still be traveling around for the rest of the day. We brought a cooler but it wouldn't have been big enough to take one of these behemoths home with us.

They had some breads made in house and I wished later that I had bought some. I had a taste of one of them dipped in a raspberry balsamic vinegar. How tasty was that.

You can see some of the prices here. Remember that the Canadian dollar is worth about 88 cents American. How do they compare? I paid $16 for 10 lbs of blueberries.

They had lots of fresh produce but I didn't need much in the way of vegetables. I did buy a half dozen corn on the cob.

Cuteness alert, cuteness alert. Even cuter than the little strawberry hats were these bee bonnets. Almost makes one long for winter...nah not really.

The round thing on the wall is actually a screen food cover to keep the bugs off. The photo doesn't show the curved shape of it. Beeswax candles, soaps and decorative pieces.

I came home from there with 20 pounds of blueberries, 2 of those blue trays of raspberries, 6 corn and a bag of nugget new potatoes. Now this was just the first stop on our road trip. We pulled out of the parking stalls and stopped at the end of the road to plan our next stop. Stay tuned for more on the Lindsay and Lori road trip or as it is more commonly known "Paddle faster, I hear banjoes".
You guys are going to have to arrange a trip out to the farm in the fall when we are selling mums. I'll give you the grand tour and make sure there are donuts and coffee :) But wait till we get it all set up for the harvest season 'cause right now we don't have much to offer :(
ReplyDeleteGawd I would love a pig out on raspberries. Looks like a very nice day out.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun day. I would probably have stayed at the farm until they kicked me out lol. I can't believe the price on blueberries - they are running anywhere from 2.99 to 3.99 a PINT here. And we've not had any berries at the farmers market this year - our lovely drought has put an end to that. Can't wait to see more of your trip. Kathy
ReplyDeleteLori,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your adventure on the farm! That is definitely my kind of place! Thanks for the advice on the Small Batch Preserves - the next time I hit Barnes and Noble I will be adding it to my collection, even if I have to order it!
I just hang my plates with plate hangers from Hobby Lobby - they have them available in 3 different sizes.
Can't wait to hear where else you and Lindsay ended up!
Oh I'm totally living vicariously through you for this trip! We have pick your own berry farms which equates to a guy sitting in a folding chair behind a folding table under a foldable awning with little green plastic berry bins stacked up on the table. He's got a portable tv, an ashtray & a metal money box & he just points to the big field behind him & says " have at it".
ReplyDeleteNot very charming or fun & for sure not worth the sweating & bug attacks & scorching sun either.
Instead I go to the farmers market on Saturdays or our local organic grocery store & buy berries there.
But I'd love to find a berry farm like where you visited - I would be on cloud 9 all day!
What a terrific place. Those strawberry pies, oh good grief they look wonderful..too bad you couldn't manage one. Florida grows a whole different type of bush blueberry, not the same as the real thing in my mind. What are you going to make with them? The raspberry balsamic bread dipper sounds good too. Yum. I am glad you had a nice day Lucy, BB probably wouldn't have enjoyed it. Hub would have be dragging his feet in the gift shop for sure.

Tamara: you bet we will make a road trip to your greenhouses. With the new bridge we will make it in no time.
ReplyDeleteLou: Winter time there isn't it. Think of this post in December when you are on the beach and we are in snow parkas.
mbkatc:Boy it is expensive where you are. Our area of B.C. is the blueberry capitol. Our farms are so full of them and they are great big juicy ones not the little bush ones. Oh and this fall if you want cranberries this is the place to be. They flood the fields and float them too the top.
Collector: The book really is worth it. I will have more posts on our trip soon. I can't give it all away in one post. Gotta keep you hanging on.
Jane: note my ending sentence in this post...paddle faster, I hear banjoes. Story at 11
Sue/Lucy: Now if my BB had been with me we would have had at least one of those pies if not two. It is his fault we don't as the ladder is at the cabin with him and my coolers are on the top shelf. Had to use small collapsible ones and there just wasn't room.
The trouble with telling you guys about all this great stuff is now I have to produce something wonderful with the berries.
...and to think Knott's Berry Farm started out as an actual berry farm!
ReplyDeleteNow I want to get myself over to Krause Farms. When did they get so large - last time I was there (probably about 5 years) it was just tables outside. NICE!!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a wonderful fabulous day.
