IF YOU CAN READ THANK A TEACHER

I know these are not indicative of the intelligence of the majority but as a high school drop out I am stunned at the lack of ability to spell even the simplest of words. These photos are from dribbleglass.com

  1. Oh, Lori, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry as I read what these "morans" had written. So I did a bit of both! Thanks for this thought-provoking (on multiple levels) post.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving the comment. You were sharp to catch my li'l switcheroo on the glassware! ;)

    Bye for now,
    Bill

  3. I shall laugh and cry. On bad days I can't spell to save my life (hence-spellchecker). I often have to glance over to the hubs and I just say, "babe, how do you spell......". He is so obliging!! He is my spellchecker. Tammy

  4. GOOD LORD..........you'd think...if you were making a frickin SIGN.......

So, if I were there, I'd tell them....WHY isn't someone saying or doing something?

  6. As a victim of a CA education (and it was waaay better back in my day) I say - "If you spell this way, thank a teacher." When my daughter was in school all but one of her teachers said that spelling was NOT important - only content. I was appalled. To this day (and she is 27) I correct her spelling. I thank her teachers for this.

My mother was the spelling and grammar police but I cannot do math thanks to the "new math" that no parent could help their kids with. For my lack, I thank my teachers for marking my correct answers wrong because I arrived at them in a different way. Sorry, can of worms for me - and I work in public education! Don't even get me started on "social advancement" and other such nonsense!

  7. The deleted post was me. The dog walked across the computer and posted before I was finished typing. Puppies, what are ya gonna do?

  8. Truly pathetic on so many levels. Yes, thank you Fox news for keeping these people "infromed". Perhaps they should turn off the television and read. May I suggest the dictionary for starters! Tammy's comment cracked me up. My husband is forever asking me how to spell certain words. And when I ask him why he doesn't use spellcheck, he very sweetly replies that I am his spellcheck lol. 10. I just want to say to Tammy, it doesn't matter if you can spell what matters is that you ask how before you would make a sign, especially one berating people about speaking English.

  12. Oh Lori, I hear you on that. Can you imagine the humeeliashun if you spell wrong while protesting... hehe

I would be horrified truly. If I could only find a way stick my hubs in my purse and tote him along with me when i'm in public filling out forms... oy! :)

  13. I taught school for 33 years. Spelling WAS important, and as I always said, when they asked HOW to spell something..LOOK it up..
Now here is how to remember some words..
    Just for you, Lori..:)

There is a LIE in believe..

A Rat In The House May Eat The Ice Cream..(arithmetic)

    There's no PEACH in SPEECH

    There's a RAT in separate..

    an ARC in Antarctic

    No TRAIL in Australia..

And a little device to remember the planets?
    My
    Very
    Excellent
    Mother
    Just
    Sliced
    Us
    Nine
    Pies...

Of course you do have to know the names, but it will help you get them in order!

As for signs..I was in Pier One and they had signs with incorrect spelling..I told the manager, and he said,
"Oh, those signs were printed in Texas."
So I guess they spell things differently in Texas??? :)

  14. Ah, I majored in English, so I DID cry when I saw those signs. :-P

No, not really. Good spelling is not a sign of intelligence; my daughter has a brilliant friend, a grad student in physics and math, who cannot spell at ALL, and can barely put coherent sentences together on paper. To read his writing, you would think he is barely literate, yet he is brilliant in his field.

However, he knows it -- and gets help when needed.

When Howard and I moved to (city deleted, don't want to knock it) we were amazed at "official" misspellings -- "alinement" was normal on car service signs instead of "alignment" -- and even the local papers wrote colloquially. We said if we had kids and were still in that city, we'd move before they were school age. Thankfully we moved before that happened.

People should check their spellings when they are putting signs out in public, though -- THAT is the dopey part, that they don't check!

And I may call on your spidey sense, Lori, in my quest to find out who Robert Tuttle was!

    All the best.... Cass

  15. Hilarious Lori. What kind of moron writes a placard in support of the English language and uses bad spelling or horrible grammar? That IS stupid.
