HOME & GARDEN:

I struggle with this piece. The opening is too small to hold a decent size flower pot so they dry out too quickly. At Christmas time it is tied with a big bow and the curly willow branches look fine. But what should I do for the rest of the year?

O.K. here is a thought.
Get the tall flowered solar lights and use the milk can as a vase. Make sure you get the flowers with the solar panel at the top or built into the flower head. You would need some sand or gravel in the can to hold the stems. If the can is not exposed to rain sprinkle potpourri in the can.
When you finally get your sun your flowers will light up at night plus give off a scent.
Make sure that if it is color that you want- the led is colored and not just the clear ones even if the flowers look colored. To make more use out of your can-if you trim cedar branches or fruit trees -stick them in as well. The lights will illuminate the branches -sort of an enchanted forest theme. If your power ever goes out the milk can is moveable to inside your foyer and it is better than candles. I use bullrushes in my milk can and solar lights.

Wow I kinda like the display you have shown in the picture personally. My paternal Grandmother had a big milk can at the top of her staircase. She would decorate hers with different colored ribbons for the given season & would have dried (& artificial flowers) that were also of the season. I most remember the yellow sunflowers with a dark green ribbon around the heck of the can. She also had a display of little stars on sticks (does that make sense) with long faux Roman Candle firework looking things & sparkly curly red, white & blue tendrils with a red ribbon for July 4th. Halloween had black, orange & gold spray painted coily branches (like willow maybe) with little pumpkins scattered about & a black ribbon/scarf. Now this was back in the 70's & 80's before she died & before the days of craft stores on every corner. Your options nowadays are so plenty! Hope some of this helps! These are both good ideas. I keep thinking about the flowers but both of you came up with plans that feature other items foremost. I thinkI have been approaching this piece all wrong.

Lori,
I like what you have now.
Maybe summer put some big sunflowers in with the curly willow. Ivy draping down sides.
Or even some of those bright colored things that go round in the wind for some bright and fun color.
Put a little section of picket fence behind it, or an old window. That would kind of frame it.

Fall, some Fall leaf branches, and a few little pumpkins. You could always set a shallow but wide bowl on the top and put them in there. Let the fall leaves drop over the side. (artificial works best)

Winter: Greenery strung with lights, a red birdhouse instead of brown. If inside, put the shallow bowl with Christmas balls and lights in it.

Since I'm not sure if it is inside, or out, things could be adapted accordingly.
They do have some wonderful artificial stems and vines now. Look real from a bit off.
