This is a monkey brain not a human one. Just so you know.

The World Health Organization rates it as a leading cause of disability. I know that for more than 8 years I had headaches/migraines on a daily basis. My head wasn't always in that screaming stabbing pain mode but it burned and throbbed every day in various degrees. No treatments worked, not even the prescription ones until one day they just stopped when menopause kicked in. The hormones dropped and the headaches stopped.

Scientists have identified a genetic defect linked to migraines. They found a gene known as TRESK was directly linked to causing migraines in some patients. They found if it the gene does not work properly environmental factors can more easily trigger pain centres in the brain and cause a sever headache.
Scientists used DNA samples from families that had migraines in common to identify the defective gene. This will direct research to find a medication that will activate the gene and switch off the migraines. Migraines seem to depend on how excitable the nerves in a specific part of the brain are.
My husband looked at me with that knowing look when I just told him about the defective gene in the brain therory. He could have told them that years ago.
I wonder if hormone replacement therapy might have helped your migraines. I feel SO bad for you having had gone through all that pain, but I'm glad it's over.

Migraines suck, there, that's how I feel about them. I get the Aura's also, try to run a till when you can only see half of the numbers. "Oh your bill is a little high?" Dear me!
ReplyDeleteAnything that can help people is good, hope they figure it out soon.

Well...I think I had that totally backwards. You had the migraines before menopause, not after. I started HRT and so many of my problems have cleared up.

Ahhh, bless your heart. My daughter suffers migraines all too often. It's not fun.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope they do find a guaranteed cure or a way to stop migraines in their tracks because they can truly be debilitating. I had been suffering with extremely severe migraines for a few years. Almost lost my job because of them. My doctor was trying different things to determine the cause so I was going through testing and different medications. In the meantime, I was also seeing a new gyn because of a few female problems I was having and she determined that I was going through a very early menopause brought on by those problems and so I ended up having an emergency full hysterectomy. A few months after the surgery I realized I no longer suffered from my migraines! That hysterectomy saved my life in many ways! I took hrt’s for almost five years and then stopped but the migraines have not returned. I get bad headaches occasionally, but no migraines.

I had two migraines. Both included barfing and pain. The Dr. took me off birth control and I never had another. IUD worked better.
ReplyDeleteYep, I still get migraines. Like Jen@Muddy Boot Dreams, above, I get the auras. The migraine pain is bad enough, then those darn auras make you completely incapacitated. Horrible.
