YOU GUYS GET ALL THE GOOD STUFF

I met with a friend for lunch yesterday. I was so nice to catch up a bit and have some girl talk. We went to a restaurant that is in a little mall. Of course that is perfect for a little shopping after lunch don't you think?
We went first to a leather shop looking at all the gorgeous leather coats and wallets. Not many deals there to catch the eye. Wander down a little further to a clothing store. The only nice piece of clothing I found was $70 for a little shirt. Uh, no thanks. I bought some nightgowns and we moved on.

On to a home decorating store where once again there was very little of interest. We did find something that is going to be the container for a birthday gift we are giving....next February. Hey I like to be organized. Don't laugh.

Lastly we went to a store called Home Sense. For all my US friends that is the same as TJ Maxx stores. Except one big difference. In Canada we don't know how to put something on clearance. I am serious. A regular sale price here is at most usually 20% off the item. I head to the clearance sections and what do I find?

Big clearance...Regular price $14.99 red tagged clearance $12.99. Big deal, not. I mean really people isn't a clearance price supposed to be at least half price. I saw this on most of the clearance items. They have barely marked them down at all.

Now how am I supposed to tablescape and decorate with all of you when I can't even get napkin rings for under 6 bucks apiece. I ask you how??

I have often shopped in Washington State and have seen the kinds of deals you guys get. I have seen the markdowns to 70% off with a store special coupon to take 10% more off everything in the store, sale price or not. Even if I pay duty and taxes on the stuff to cross back over the border the same day it is worth it. Not to mention the selection and choices you have as well.

That does it. I will have to plan a shopping trip to the US. I will buy only clearance items and I will be looking for those extra markdowns that are everywhere. I will shop til I drop and my car will be so full it will take me hours to get through customs but boy will I be tablescaping then. Look out.

  1. Someday I need to tell the story about the white wool jacket my mom bought my late husband. Lets put it this way my mom is the cheapest mom on the planet (generous but cheap if that makes sense), and she was THRILLED when she gave the cashier a $10 bill and got change back. But the story goes much deeper than that.

I hear you though - we rarely get the GREAT deals - thus is why I rarely shop. I inherited my mom's cheapness.

  2. I couldn't agree more! 20% off isn't a sale; it's the difference you find between a big retailer and the little guy if you shop around. 'Clearance' means (or should mean) priced to clear out -- even if it means dropping to 90% off to get rid of it. Unfortunately most stores hang on to stuuf until it's damaged beyond being desired before marking down more than 50%.

  3. It is kind of sad that we have to go down to the States to shop, in order to get deals. Unfortunately, that's the way it is though.
    Love reading your blog!

  4. Don't even get me started on Grocery stores, Save on foods? Price Smart? Buy Low? What exactly are they talking about? They cost more then the others most of the time.

Or here's a good one, "another low price", are you kidding?

Our retailers need to smarten up, then maybe everyone would spend a bit more. And no, cutting back on Sales staff does not make me spend more.

  5. I hate when I have money to spend and I can't find anything or everything seems overpriced to me...then when I have NO money I want everything!

  6. I feel a bit sheepish. We do get great prices here and things at TJ Maxx and Marshall's go for a song. But the last time I picked up dishes there, I thought, I have dishes at home that I have only used for tablescapes. We have NEVER eaten off them. That is when I knew that I was playing a game that was costing me money. So I limit my trips. I have no self restraint. Maybe you guys are getting the REAL bargain!! :-)

    xoxo

  7. Oh I have to laugh at Jane's comment -- maybe you DO have the best deal, as you aren't tempted by the 70 or 90 percent off clearance racks, and don't end up filling your house with dishes and dishes and more dishes, and who knows what else?

But it IS fun to find the bargains. We feel your pain.

  8. $2.00 off is not clearance for goodness sake! But I have to agree with Jane, it definitely would stamp out alot of temptation! So feel free to come on down to the States and stimulate our economy:) Kathy

  9. Oh I would dry up and blow away! I live for the bargains! I hope we don't get that VAT they are talking about.
One need only look at the tags on things from Michael's. US price compare to Canada! What a huge difference!

  10. Mother in law was a sucker for a sale sticker. The cheaper she was the more she bragged.

  11. Most the cleanance items I find are about $2-3 dollars off the regular price. But remember that TJMaxx's regular price is already discounted.
