**UPDATE**
Electrolux has reimbursed me for the cost of the part only. That was about half of my bill.
It is better than nothing.
I will say that this only came about once I took to social media with my complaint. Until I started discussing it on their Facebook page I was getting nowhere. Suddenly they wanted to look into it further.
I am still not impressed by the whole situation and will not buy their products or deal with Sears any longer.
The cheque came yesterday.

In 2009 we bought a new gas range from Sears. It was a Frigidaire Gallery series and it was not cheap. Today it is $1600.00 for the same stove with the same warming drawer and the convection oven which mine has. Within a few months of the warranty expiring we experienced problems with the keypad that controls the gas oven, clock, self cleaner, convection, timer etc.
Some of the numbers wouldn’t work no matter how you pressed on them. We worked around it for a while using the 6 instead of the 5 when setting temperatures. Then we called the repairman. He came by and checked it out. Unplugged the keypad from the back of the stove and when he plugged it back in it was working again. Just a reset apparently. This keypad has steadily been failing, number by number, since then. More numbers. The convection button. Then the timer. The last straw was when we could no longer shut off the gas oven. The keypad was dead, other than the clock. In order to shut off the oven we had to cut the power to that part of the house so that when we turned the power back on the oven had shut down. I consider this to be outside of normal wear and tear. This is a faulty keypad. This has been confirmed by the fact that not only have they stopped using that original part, they are completely out of stock everywhere in Canada of the new part that replaces it. They don’t have it in the US either and if they did it isn’t certified in Canada so if our house burns down because of it we are not covered by insurance.
I have 2 weeks to get ready for Christmas. Two weeks to bake in preparation for Christmas and then of course to actually cook Christmas dinner and our Boxing Day party food as well. Oh ya, New Years Eve too.
Frigidaire says they have an agreement with Sears. Sears says it isn’t their problem. They can send a repairman out but they don’t have the part anyways. I have a repairman thanks. What I don’t have is any more patience with this issue.
We will be buying a new stove. WE WILL NEVER, EVER BUY FRIGIDAIRE APPLIANCES AGAIN AND WE WILL NOT PURCHASE ANY NEW APPLIANCES THROUGH SEARS. EVER. AGAIN.

Sears is losing money hand and foot these days and I'm thinking we'll see it file for bankruptcy before long. Your experience may point to one reason.
ReplyDeleteSears' major problem is their service after the sale. It used to not be that way, but it is now.
ReplyDeleteWe don't buy from Sears any more either. We used to buy everything from them, but because their service (or lack thereof) we have discontinued shopping there for appliances. Period.
I join you in your sentiments...
Hugs to you,
Jackie
Lori, what a horrid situation to be in...I'm appalled at the treatment of both Sears, and Fridigaire.
ReplyDeleteWe have appliances from both of those companies, and other items also, just purchased. There are fewer options up here, then on the coast. Now I wish that I had read this post a few months earlier.
I hope that you get everything worked out soon, not having a working range sucks.
Jen
I would put the blame squarely where it belongs and that is the manufacturing owner of the gas range. Sears could provide the service IF THEY HAD THE PART. The part not being available is the responsibility of the manufacturer. So don't ever use or buy and Electrolux product. They own and make Frigidaire products. Sears only carries the brand.
ReplyDeleteWhen I spend my money in a store I feel they are responsible for holding their suppliers accountable. They are in the power position with the company not the consumer other than to exercise our right to boycott a product in the future.
ReplyDeleteMy point is why should I have to pay for a part that is obviously for a product that was defective early on and now is being replaced by a new part (albeit unavailable) because they discontinued the old part. It should be a recall replacement and not at my expense.
Lori
The 'part no longer available' is a ploy well known in the vacuum business by a company who now manufactures gas ranges. . . HUH!
ReplyDeleteIt's the "passing the buck" crap that drives me crazy. A stove that is 4 years old should not be breaking down already.
ReplyDeleteMy mom has a stove in her basement that is 50 YEARS old and it still works. Hmm..... The lack of craftsmanship these days is appalling.
I bought a sweeper from Sears as I wanted a canister. The rug part stopped and my husband took it to Sears to be repaired. They charged us over $50 only to tell us that they couldn't repair it and we would have to buy a new one which was almost as much as a new sweeper would be. They had our Visa number and charged that amount so there was nothing we could do without a big fight. The crazy thing was, my husband had originally taken the back off and put a note inside to let them know the problem since they sent it out of town. Lo and behold when we got it back, the note was still in there. We do not by anything from Sears now. Oh, we are in the U.S.A.
ReplyDeleteEver since KMart bought out Sears a few years ago things have gone steadily downhill. You can now buy Craftsman (Sears) brands at Kmarts - but no warranty - how nice is that? The big Sears store in the mall here went out of business not long ago - and I see they have moved a shoddy rendition of Sears to a building down the street - but not in the mall. It is in a bad spot and soon I'm sure it will close.
ReplyDeleteKmart in our area is almost dead too - no matter what you go in for, they don't have it - so we've completely stopped going there - there are never more that 20 or 30 cars in their parking lot and I think most of them are employees. Often when we would need to check out there would be no clerks at all and we'd have to trek back to the service department to check out and the often made mistakes and then we'd have to wait for a service desk manager to come and straighten out the service desk employee - you get my drift - no more Sears and no more Kmart.
