I don’t make resolutions for the new year. I don’t want to feel badly about not achieving some pre-set goal.
I do, however, get this feeling of needing change this time of year. Once all the preparations and excitement of Christmas are over it seems like time to clear things out. Personally and physically.
Time to clear out the clutter in my home and in my head. This spurs the changes in life that I may need to make.
Maybe it comes from the days growing longer each day even if only by seconds. Maybe it comes from the giant mess my home has been for the past month as the food preparations and decorations take over and the guests come and go.
So what am I going to do? Once all the Christmas items are put away I will only put back what I love. If I don’t love an item it will is time to get rid of it.
I will seek out good organizational tips and try to use them in my home. This should start in my pantry cupboard which is always a big mess by January.
All this is especially important this year because we may be moving. We are planning a downsize, not of our home size but our yard size. This is the year I hope this happens because I can no longer keep up with the large gardens I have set up.
I want to clear out the house as much as possible so it shows better but also because I want a fresh start in a new home.
So no resolutions but lots of incentive to make changes.
Are you planning on making any changes in your life for 2014? Do you commit to them out loud for all to hear or do you quietly promise yourself to make them come true? What is the biggest change or resolution you have ever kept?
I just cleaned out our pantry, too. Needs to be done, and somehow, like you, I feel these kind of urges at this time of year. We're hoping for a move this year, to get closer to our Alberta kids, and away from the busy-ness of the Fraser Valley. Here's hoping your down-sizing move works out for you!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have an exciting year ahead, best of luck with the move! I don't make resolutions either, I just try to cut back a bit here and there. I've been doing "selective" purging for a few years now and that seems to work well. Happy New Year Lori, wishing you all the best in 2014:@)
ReplyDeleteMy hubby and I did a cleaning out this past year in each room and it amazes me that we still have too much to still get away. I read once that in your closet that every time you wear something to hang that to one side and at the end of the year what is hanging on the other is the things you do not wear and need to get rid of. I want to do that this year. I have so many clothes I need to stop hanging on and telling myself I might wear that. Lol.
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
Organizing, and cleaning up always feels good to do, especially after it's all accomplished.
ReplyDeleteIt's exciting, and a lot of work to move, but the change will be fun. How long have you lived there?

New Year always gets me this way. A fresh start with your whole life neat and tidy and freshly scrubbed.I'll just settle for a tidy shed and that's quite a challenge, believe me.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog,I was drawn to look at it initially because of the wonderful name.
Happy New Year

My daughter and I spent a week before Christmas going thru the house, room by room and cleaned out every cabinet, shelf, closet, etc and took bags of stuff to good will. Wow - lots of room for new junk now! LOL.
ReplyDeleteI quit a 2 pack a day smoking habit. It took 7 months to do it, but I'm smoke free for 24 years now.
Downsizing as I clean is on my agenda, too. DD3 is buying a house, so I'm hoping she'll take some good stuff. My friend is a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul--she will be getting good stuff my daughter doesn't want. Taking her special toys, books and baby clothes will make me lots of room. She is excited about receiving these things. I am on my 3rd year of yarn diet, using up stash--about 20 000 meters each of the last 2 years. This is the year of fabric stash-bustin', too.
ReplyDeleteWe hope to stay here till health issues force us to move. That move will be traumatic if I don't seriously simplify ahead of that time.
I LOVE the photo of the trees you posted. I hope that you succeed in all your plans, my friend. They sound like plans that I need to make, myself. Each time I look at a bookcase or a closet, I shake my head and wonder, "What was I thinking when I put THAT in there....and why am I keeping it?"
ReplyDelete:)
I need to do some major re-organizing.
Sending warm hugs to you,
Jackie
