IF ONLY WE HAD A FAMILY DOG AT THE TIME

Joycee over at Granny Mountain did a post on Mac and Cheese that sent me spiraling into the childhood food trauma memories that have shaped me into the maladjusted stable person I am today.

My mother was a good cook but she had so little money there were many times when she cut corners in the kitchen and unfortunately the results were often not very palatable. I have to say that because of this I never scrimp on food, buying the best ingredients I can find for my cooking.
I was a fussy eater when I was a child too so that didn't help. We were of the generation where you ate what was put on your plate and you would sit there until you were finished. I remember the hot tears running down my face as I gagged trying to eat something that turned my stomach. Macaroni was one of those things.

Well I was nothing if not resourceful. We had a big old table like this one. It was a pinkish red too and best of all the underside had wooden braces running across the table and they were about 5 inches wide.
Turns out this is the perfect place to slip that tough hunk of meat your are trying to chew or those disgusting macaroni noodles. No one will ever find them there.
That is unless you mother decides she will sell that table one day and she will turn it over to show the prospective buyer how sturdy it is.
The clatter of dried up macaroni and other unidentifiable pieces of food made quite a sound when they hit the floor. My mother was so embarrassed.
You know I don't know if the table was sold but I never really got in trouble over it...that I remember...Maybe I am just blocking it out.
So I for one will not be making any of the Mac and Cheese recipes from Joycee's post but if you are a bit more well adjusted head on over there and get your Mac on.
Me? Don't worry, I will be cowering in the closet until I get the macaroni thoughts out of my head.

  1. Mac and cheese is one of my favorites...

  2. I know what you mean. I never could find a place to hide the stuff I hated to (or could not) eat. But shocking as it may be, mac and cheese (long before K-Dinner) was always one of my favorite foods - and still is. Though I have to admit it got more than a bit tiresome when we practically lived on it for a month. At the time we were 'locked out' while a foreign union took us over and decided to show the company it had some sort of power. It's surprising how many ways pasta can be made into something - well, healthy if not exactly delicious. (Lopsided grin at the memory).Yes, I still like a well made macaroni dinner. But please, NO lobster, crab or clams. (Shudder) ATB

  3. I hid my unwanted foods, too! There was a shelf under our Duncan Phyfe table, and I distinctly remember when Mom found a grilled cheese sandwich and other dried-up delicacies under there. Oh course, she didn't know which of the three of us had hidden them. ;>)!

  4. Stewed tomatoes were hard to hide, and the dogs didn't want them....

  5. I grew up having to eat everything on my plate too. Silly - just plain silly.

  7. What a horror story! On the other hand, my mother made the best baked macaroni and cheese and I wish she were still here with us to give me her recipe. I did have a good laugh at your post and I remember a table very much like this!

    XO,
    Jane

  8. I'm not much on macaroni, either. Especially cold macaroni salad. Yuck! It's bad enough when it's hot--but cold...no thanks!

  10. My sister might have been hiding her peas under the table. Because although we had a dog, it didn't come inside. And she hated peas!! Still does.

That's such a cute story Lori.

  11. This cracks me up. Seriously, my boys PREFER the nasty store brand mac and cheese and they always want it. I HATE IT. I'll make HOME MADE with nice noodles and thick, cheesy sauce...but NO WAY will I eat that fake crap. LOL

  12. When my kids were little, we had a table with the perfect hiding spot for unwanted foot. Unbeknownst to me. When we moved the movers tipped the table and the pieces of petrified food came clattering to the floor. It was hysterical.

We occassionally have fun reminiscing with the kids about hiding their dinner in that table. I had no idea they were doing it!

We recently gave that table to young friends just starting out. I wonder if another generation will discover the hiding spots!
