Okay I have a little rant here. I will probably tick off a bunch of you and you will never speak to me again but here I go. My intent is not to criticize the regular bloggers who always comment and participate. I just thought these blog badges were like trading cards. Please don't be insulted.
You know how we create a blog badge for others to put on their sites. Cheap advertising, I know.
Well I feel if you offer a blog badge for others to put on their sites you should darn well be putting the badges of others on your site. I just don't get it. I see that all the time. Isn't that the point of doing them? To share back and forth. To help promote our fellow bloggers.
Of course it is an individual choice but I thought the point of doing them was to showcase the awesome blogs we find. Not just our own.
What do you think?
BTW you can grab both of my blog's badges over there on the sidebar. Help yourself.
(It is okay if you don't have a blog badge or know what one is...I am just talking about the ones who do. If you do want one and don't know how I am happy to help you with one...and I will put it on my site lol.)
(I keep updating this post. I am not angling to get MY badge on anyone's site. I just think if you offer your blog badge you should also post others on your site. Not necessarily mine but anyone's.)
Did you like a post? Click on the SU button to Stumble it. Thanks.
I think you have a very valid point.
ReplyDeleteI have chosen not to create a badge nor to post them - - - seems my sidebar gets filled up as it is with archives, quotes, bloggy awards, and other eclectic things I choose to put there.
BUT - - - If I was asking you to take MY badge (which doesn't exist) I would certainly take YOURS!
Wave, wave!
ReplyDeleteHow does a badge work? I'm such a naive blogger :)
ReplyDeleteVery good point - that being said, I will now hang my head in shame, because I don't think I have you one my roll. I SUCK.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to update my badge roll, but I'm behind.
Hmmm. I could see how this could go a few different ways for different folks. My take is that it should be on a case by case basis. When I kept up with my blog, there were blogs (& thus bloggers) that I read but they did not read my blog in return. I didn't expect them too either necessarily. So in that case - there is no reason for us to exchange blog buttons.
ReplyDeleteThink of it like this - I love the band U2. I will wear a U2 tshirt but I don't expect the band members of U2 to wear a "I heart Jane" t-shirt in return. Sure it would be super cool if they did, but I don't expect it.
Hope that helps!
I have you in my blog list so I know the name of your new post..but I don't have a blog button and don't have any on my sidebar...
ReplyDeleteHow do you make a blog button?? :)
I made a blog button free for the offering. I really don't know if anyone took it. My sidebar goes for so long I don't think anyone would ever get that far to see a button, but I am willing to start putting them on. If I offended you I am really sorry. It wasn't on purpose. And you have a very cute button that I am copying right now.

I don't get the whole button thing. And I'm sorry you're upset about it. When I saw the start of your post, before I read the button thing, I thought it would be about not leaving comments--I'm guilty of that often, mea culpa, mea culpa, so I promised myself I would try to leave more comments. I stand by this promise, even though that's not what the post was about. ♥♥
ReplyDeleteI don't even know what a blog button is.... I'm one of those bloggers too... sigh....sorry
ReplyDeleteAwww, Sigrun, sweetie. You are a good blogger friend. I hope you don't think I was unhappy or talking about you. It was just a little rant.
ReplyDeleteA blog badge is something created specifically to have other people post it on their sites so I just thought it was fair for them to post other people's badges on their own sites.
I am really not upset. Bigger problems than that in life but just wanted to make a point.
I could have sworn I had yours on my blog. Maybe it got lost when my daughter revamped my background, etc over Christmas. Sorry!! It's back now and in the top spot, as it should be!
ReplyDeleteHey Darlin'
ReplyDeleteI think your point was well made. I totally get what you are saying, and I agree. But, I also think it could go a couple of different ways as well...
I have a blog button which is there for the taking and sharing, and yes, I do strongly feel that blogging (for me) is about connections and friendships.
I never could get a scrolly thingamagig to work on my sidebar, so I created a "Cool Site of the Day" instead, as a way to promote a different blog each day. :)
I have been wondering about all the badges I have been seeing...I'll just stick to my bloglist for now...
ReplyDeleteI don't do badges at the mo, but I understand your point. How's the new job btw? Getting back into the swing of work again? Took me a while to get used to NOT having all day to get things done. LOL!

Funny you should rant about this, we do have a different perspective on badges. I do have a badge for my blog, I actually made it for another reason other than exchanging badges. I use my blogroll for those blogs I read often (including yours, hehe) and so that my readers can find new blogs that might interest them. I use the setting that includes a photo, the name of the blog and their latest post. I like this much better than a badge, because it is tells a bit more about a blog than just its name.
ReplyDeleteSome bloggers prefer badges over blogrolls and someone requested a badge from me, so I made one. I prefer blogrolls myself. I do have a few badges on my blog. A couple of them are my favorite go-to blogs for recipes. Some of them I don't read everyday, but I want their link handy when I need them. My friends and family members know they can come to my blog for these links when they need them. They are not bloggers themselves, so this is convenient for them. Others are for this same purpose, but are for blogs that tell you where you can buy something beachy.
This leads me to the main reason I created a badge — advertising. In this case, I actually pay someone to put my badge on their blog. These are blogs that, in my case, blog about the beach and promote beach-themed products. Since I am getting ready to open an Etsy Store, already have a Zazzle Store and the Tiki Hut Store, plus a new (and exciting) store that will open in a few months, I am looking for people who would be interested in my products. People who read those blogs are looking for these types of products and the relationship works out very well.
For my blogging friends and faithful readers, I much prefer a blogroll, I think they are more personal and more friendly than a badge. For me a blogroll says, "Check out this blog, it is such fun!" I have found many of my favorite blogs through blogrolls on others sites, so this is my preferred way of sharing.
Great post! I never thought about this before and it has led to an informative and interesting discussion.
LOL we all like a good rant now and then, that's what our blogs are for isn't it? I have to admit though I thought a badge was the same as an award DOH! (that has to be said Homer Simpson style LOL) How do you create a badge - is it just a case of putting something together in powerpoint and then sticking it on your side bar, or is it a bit more technical.
ReplyDeleteNow I understand the difference between badges and awards at least Ha Ha! Jo xx
That wasn't a rant, that was a valid statement. I kinda know what a blog badge but do not own one.
ReplyDeleteLori,
ReplyDeleteI love a good rant. You are so right about the exchange of badges and the spirit of what the exchange stands for.
Alas, I do not have one but would be ever so grateful if you could help me create one. Something with "Asshat" in it perhaps LOL
I've never much understood the 'badge' thing but methinks it grew out of Entrecard (another bloggy thing I have no clue about), but I think your design is attractive and your point seems well taken.
ReplyDeleteHugs and blessings,
I just made a blog button not because I wanted one but I kept having people ask for one...so I made one and posted it. It is there for others to take if they want but I don't care if they don't use it either.
ReplyDeleteI currently do not display a lot of blog buttons...
I have posted others buttons for events they are hosting, I always link up to all the parties I join, and I have listed quite a few blog links I like but I just don't use their buttons to do it. I guess I must be behind in blogger etiquette :(
Hi Lucy! I like taking a blog button from someone that I read often and I like to share these buttons with others who read my blog. It is free publicity for this blogging friend, the way I see it. Sometimes, though, I forget to check to see if these blogs actually have a button. My bad!!
ReplyDeleteI love when someone takes mine, but not everyone likes to display them; I would suppose because they prefer to use a blog roll. Most of the ones that I display are followers and friends, like YOU!! Others are just from blogs that I really like and want to share with others.
I do think that if someone creates a blog button, they need to display other people's blog buttons. I think it's nice to help promote others, not just yourself. Tit for Tat, don't you think? Now, I'm gonna go back and check to see that I have buttons from ALL my pals! hugs, Ethel
You are such a good advocate. I love sharing badges on my site. I have no reason to advertise so I have none, but I thank you for helping Muddy Boots make a badge I love having hers on my site for others to see. I want to take the time to congratulate your country on the the Ice Dancing Gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. Not only were they wonderful to watch, but they are so genuine in their reaction to winning. Really a delight.
ReplyDeleteI just grabbed your badge Lori. You know, I never thought about this stuff. I'm new to blogging and I was just so proud that I actually figured out how to make a badge. Seriously, it took me days. No one has taken my badge and put it on their blog, but I don't care. I would like to create a place like you have at the bottom of my page where I can display my badges, but I don't know how. I grabbed yours and tried to put it where you have yours displayed. It's all a work in progress....
