These dates don’t start out bad. They are full of promise in fact. They make you feel good. Happy. Energized. They can sometimes save your life.
But time passes. We become complacent. Our needs, once important have now dwindled. We now ignore what once we had to have.
One day though we realize we can’t live without them again. It can be in the middle of the night. It can be when we feel our worse.
But it is too late. They are no longer going to be available to us. They are not going to be good for us. They are not even safe any more.
There is a good side to these bad dates. We are so seldom sick in our house we never finish off these over the counter medications. Here we have Aspirin, Dristan, Robitussin Cough, Vicks Vaporub, Buckley’s Cough, Melatonin and some PMS type meds that I don’t even know why I have since I never had PMS.
We just don’t use this stuff more than a day or two in a year and that is a really good way to end up on a bad date. Some of these expired years ago. Hey don’t you judge me. I never go in there.
Make it part of your Spring cleaning routine to clean out your bathroom cupboards and medicine chest. Don’t flush things down the toilet though. Check with your local agencies and pharmacies on how to best dispose of your expired medications.
Nothing worse than wanting that cough syrup with codeine and realizing it's expired!!
ReplyDeleteGood warning.
ReplyDeleteGood advice dear! I feel like lot of people dont know these simple things. Though I go over more meds than you, so we dont get alot of this left over. :)
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Always a good idea to check them every once in a while. Happy Weekend:@)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the reminder...
ReplyDeleteAnd...on a slightly different (but similar) topic....I take a permanent pen and write the expiration date on each canned good item that I buy for my pantry. I know that the date is already on the can, but I write it on the top and side in marker so that I can see it at a glance.
Very amusing. You teased us with your title and intor and I was awaiting some nugget from your past or present secret life and it's about..expiration dates. Love it! I looked in my medicine bainet and found some Zinc tablets that were 20 years old!
ReplyDeleteVicks expires? I'm just trying to imagine what could happen if I put expired Vicks into my chest and sinus-steaming water (which is the only way I use Vicks. Maybe it won't stick to the walls of the sink when I drain the water.
ReplyDeleteOh,after reading this I went through my medicine box,I am too embarrassed to make public the amount of out of date pills and potions I found.
ReplyDeleteSometimes we all need a wake up call like this.thanks for the warning.
Carolyn.
Great advice, and yes, please don't flush them, or throw them in the garbage, the Pharmacies have great programs for getting rid of old drugs.
ReplyDeleteWe are like you, hardly use anything, and when we moved there was soooo many old drugs...I just swept it all away and took it to London Drugs.
