I have shopped at the same grocery chain for 30 years. The same store even.
Today I went in to do my shopping. Made my way through the produce section picking out all my fruits and vegetables.
The next stop was the deli counter to get a few things. I hadn’t had breakfast and as I often do I asked for a box of the MoJo fries. You know what I mean? The potato wedges. No different than having hash browns…don’t you judge lol.
Anyway, to make it easier for the cashier to scan my little box of eaten fries when I go through the checkout I asked the deli person to put the price sticker on the side because I am going to eat them while I shopped. This way I don’t have to tear the sticker to open the box.
This woman actually said to me “Be careful because they have cameras and they watch”.
WTF? I said “excuse me” to which she replied “oh I didn’t mean you would do it but we are finding the empty boxes all over the store”.
I was so embarrassed. There were other people standing around there who heard this. I shoved them back on the counter and told her to keep them. I wanted more from the deli but I walked away. She is lucky I didn’t throw them at her.
I would have left the store had I not been so far into my shopping trip as I didn’t have the time to start over down the street at their rival store.
People may well eat the potato wedges and leave the box on the shelves unpaid for. They can also drink a carton of chocolate milk and leave that. Open the bag of mixed nuts from the bulk section and munch on those while they shop. Banana? Apple? Sure could.
What an ignorant thing to say.
When the cashier asked me if I had found everything okay I was ready let fly with a nasty comment. Luckily someone I knew came up behind me in the checkout and we started talking. I saved my anger until I got home and sent off a scathing email to the head office.
Glad I could vent here and if I don’t get an appropriate response from their head office I will then be naming names using all my social media connections.
Sometimes people are so rude and just talk before they think. Unreal. Good for you to bring it to the attention of the head office. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteThe assumption she made! Wow, that would make it difficult to return to that store. I hope you get a positive response from head office. m
ReplyDeleteI hate, absolutely hate those that put us in positions we don't feel comfortable in. I would have left, but that is only because if I had stayed, the police probably would have been called. . .. . c'est la vie
ReplyDeleteI may have handed back the box and left my buggy filled with groceries in front of her and politely said, "You know, I've changed my mind. Make sure you put these groceries back in the right places, they have cameras everywhere"
ReplyDeletekfay
If only I had more time but I really couldn't have started over.
DeleteThis would have been a perfect comeback.
I understand your ire. I often open a bottle of orange juice and drink it while I'm shopping, then pay for the half-empty bottle. It had better never be suggested I might be stealing--unless I didn't pay of course. The irony of it is, you TOLD her that you were going to munch, how honest is that? Keep us "posted". Happy Easter.
ReplyDeleteIt is that full moon. Hubby and I have seen everything this weekend, well, it seems that way. Men kicking their own dogs, people walking dogs with no bags for poo clean up, driving wrong way down roads - in and out of campgrounds, people letting water and waste water run all over the campground, people driving road rage style, and NOW this??
ReplyDeleteARGHHHHHHHHH, let me off this space ship please!
I like that you didn't just rant and rave in the store (seen it done) but went home and took the time to write an email to the people who can actually make a change and address the clerk's inappropriate comment!
ReplyDeletePeople are too rude but... dont sweat it! You dd the right thing and got it off your chest and let it go girl! Easter is around the corner! Have a happy one! :)
ReplyDeleteHugs,
You were right to do what you did emailing the head office or management.
ReplyDeleteSo aggravating that a rude few ruin things for the rest of us. My daughter actually had an employee follow her around the store after she opened a soda and drank it as she shopped. I often buy things from the deli and pay for the empty carton as you do. Luckily, I've never had a problem--or a rude cashier.
ReplyDeleteI am impressed with your control. I would have said, "I am ever so sorry. Now I am going to have to report your rudeness, Bitch!"
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to be really intelligent to work in a grocery store, dontcha know.
It'd be cool if they sent you a fat gift card.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that happened though. :(
Hope you hear from them!
ReplyDeleteThat was a ridiculous thing for her to say. I mean, you had just told her you wanted the sticker on the side so it would be easier for the cashier to ring you up. How inconsiderate. :o(
ReplyDeleteI saw your commenting issue thing below this post. You can tell whoever is having issues commenting on your blog that all they need to do is clear out their cookies on whatever internet browser they are using. That solves the problem every time.
