This is Maxine our only pet. Maxine is 13 years old and she is really starting to go downhill. She has so many lumps and bumps on her and in her that we gave up counting. She has trouble breathing no doubt due to lumps pushing on her organs inside.
She must be downstairs I said. Max is never, ever out front by herself and even with us she needs to be on her leash because we live on a busy street.
My son ran out the front door so fast he didn't even put his shoes on. The dog was far enough away from the house that he could barely see her. There was traffic lined up in both directions while our old girl stood in the middle of the two lanes. Thankfully everyone stopped to make sure she didn't get hit. She happily ran over to the direction of my son's voice and came trotting home with him.
Apparently the side gate was left open, I presume by the lawn guy who comes on Thursdays. This was Saturday and I guess she finally noticed it. Had it been a few hours later she likely would have been hit in the darkness and we didn't even know she had left the yard.
You can bet the lawn guy will get an ear full. She may not have long left but I'll be damned if I want her to die on the roadway.
She shudders like she is having strokes now and then. She falls over when her back end gives out. She doesn't get up very often and for a while was peeing in her sleep. Thank goodness that has stopped. She still eats like a horse and has a really good appetite but we can tell she is rather confused at times.
We almost lost our sweetheart yesterday. My son looked out the front window when he heard a truck honk its horn. "Where is Max?" he asked. "There is a black lab in the middle of the street". She must be downstairs I said. Max is never, ever out front by herself and even with us she needs to be on her leash because we live on a busy street.

Lori,
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky! Poor Maxine must have been so scared! I'm so glad you saved her! I lost a dog once that way. He was blind and got out -- it was devastating. Thank God that didn't happen to your Maxine!
Oh, Lori. Thank goodness you found her so quickly. Your son deserves a good word. We have three dogs and when the gardener leaves the gate open two of mine head out. Thank goodness the third one quickly comes and tattles or we'd have trouble.
ReplyDeleteOh holy beejeebers - this kind of stuff scares the socks off me! The husband & I are so conscious about where our dog & bird are at any given time that it's become obsessive & we check & double check all the time. The dog is deaf now & can't hear us calling him & the bird, while his wings are clipped, he's still quite capable of short bursts of "flight".
ReplyDeleteWhen we can't find either - we go into overdrive-focus search mode. It's a wonder I've not had a heart attack just from this!
Glad to hear your Maxine is home safe & sound. You might look into a self-closing gate maybe.
Oh no, this makes me so sad. We had a really old dog named Brandy. At the end it was the same...she was THE BEST dog ever. I just wanna squeeze Max. :(
ReplyDeleteOh, how scary!! Max looks so much like our first black lab Trouble. He lived to be 17.
ReplyDeleteAwww. My sister's dog-child, Tabby, passed a few months back... about the same age. It was heartbreaking. She was family to all of us. I'm so glad a truck didn't get her. That's no way to go.
ReplyDeleteOh sweet Maxine, thank goodness you are o.k.
ReplyDeleteOH my goodness I am so happy this had a good ending. Give her a hug from me!!
ReplyDeleteOh Lori,
ReplyDeleteYoua re in a tought situation right now with your sweet Max.....I hope that she is OK....it is so hard when they get this old...my heart goes out to you and yours!
How frightening! I bet the lawn guy will get an earful. It's hard enough to see our pets age, but to lose one because of his carelessness would be just awful. Glad your son has an eagle eye and noticed her in the street. Kathy
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, you were fortunate. We've had the opposite experience. Can't even let my mind go there. So glad all turned out okay.

I can imagine that happening because I've had a dog hit on the road. Please give her extra hugs from me! She is a great old gal!
ReplyDeletePoor baby, it's hard when they get old, and confused. Hard on them, and hard on you. Thank goodness you found her in time.

Awww! Sweet pup! Thank God she didn't "GO" by getting struck by a car! Our lab is 3 and I love her and wish she could live 30 years!
ReplyDeletePoor Max. I hope when the time comes, its quiet like, in her sleep.
ReplyDeleteLori, this made me so sad! You know what we just walked through and I hate to think of it for you. I have become convinced that commercial dog food, filled with GMO corn and other grains as well as chicken-by-products (read "chicken poop" in many instances), is the culprit for many of our dogs developing these lumps. Another friend's dog just died from these and JoJo had them. We are feeding Minky an organic dry as well as lots of table scraps and raw food. I may have to do a blog about this. Wow. We were able to reduce JoJo's lumps a LOT by switching her to Minky's current regimine and I think it bought her a year. I hope this helps in some way!
