HEAR YE, HEAR YE, READ ALL ABOUT IT

We are all so computer involved now. It is such a part of our regular life. We get our news online, our information for where to eat, what is going on in our neighborhoods all online.
When we need a job or need to hire someone. Yup, to the computer.
I get regular updates of my small town local paper on Twitter along with my provincial newscast updates, Canadian news and CNN.
We only get the daily newspaper because my husband likes to read it before he goes to work.
Now I hear that Canwest Global Communications Corp. has sought bankruptcy protection.
They publish 12 daily newspapers. This includes the Vancouver Sun which has been around as long as I can remember. They are trying to sheild themselves from their creditors until they can  refinance some debt and restructure their operations.
This is the biggest media company in Canada.
Not only do they supply our main newspaper each day but Global is one of the main television news programs with morning, noon, dinner time and eleven o'clock new program every day.
So now what? Have we caused the demise of the printed word by embracing the world wide web?
Do you read the daily newspaper? What will we line the bird cages with if they go under?

Hey don't go yet...did you leave me a note?

  1. I haven't had a paper delivered to my door in many years Lori.
I use paper towels for the bottom of my bird cage, it absorbs better.
Welcome to 2010 is what I say, less trees being cut also lol (maybe I should't be laughing).
Hey new look to your blog I like it.
    Love Claudie

P.S. You know I have to tell you. Everyone has a hard time loading my site, well for some darn reason yours takes at least 4 minutes, which never usually happens. Not sure why. Just thought I would tell you.

  2. The newspaper in Seattle went online. I have heard that quite a few are doing this to save money. I only get the local paper that comes out once a week. I do use the computer for most news.

  3. I never read the news...it is too depressing. I shall miss newspapers if they die, it use to be an important part of my daily life.

  4. I actually always read the paper. It makes me sad to think of the daily paper being a thing of the past - it's something I like to do when I get home from work. I sit on the couch, read the paper, and then make dinner.

So many changes. I'm getting too old...

  5. Well, a sign of the times. My kids like to point out that I was born BEFORE the invention of the ball point pen.

There was a time, not so very long ago, that every one knew a farrier by name.

  6. I don't read any dailies at all. I seek out my news selectively from favourite sources such as BBC World, The Vancouver Sun, CNN and peruse Google's News selection.

However, I've never been a News Paper person. I have always found them cumbersome and long-winded and have always felt there is too much in there that I don't want or need to read.

I think media outlets need to change the way they produce news and spend more money creating very rich news online environments because that is where their audience is now.

  7. I never read the paper. We USED to get it, but then it was going unopened and unread and then thrown into the trash. So, I stopped paying for it.

    But - - - I don't read much news online either.

I guess I've just got my head buried in the sand!

  8. Oh - - - I do listen to Public Radio when I'm in the car - - - I hear quite a bit of news on there! Does that count for something?

  9. A newspaper arrives daily, and I rarely read it. I tend to always be rushing out the door, thinking I'll read it later ... but, by the time I could sit down and do that, it's old news. I sneak peeks at breaking news online during the workday.

  10. Lori,
It is so odd that you posted this now, my husband and I decided just two days ago to stop the paper....it just has gone up too high! And like you mention, online is free and it is there 24/7. Oh by the way, the room is private ! One at a time please! :)

  12. I still read the daily paper out of Austin, as well as our little local paper that's published twice a week. But the Austin paper has gotten so high that I cheat and read it at work, don't subscribe at home anymore. But apparently most people in our town still read the paper, as they donate them to us at the end of the week to line our cages. I don't know what we'll do if all the papers stop publishing! Kathy

  13. DH reads it everyday and does all the puzzles, anagrams, Sudoku etc.

I read it sometimes, but always look at the sales flyers, plan our meals accordingly.

I do read the weekly local paper cover to cover..

And we have the news channel on all day..

Plus I read the computer too..

We have no pets, so I don't need the paper for that..

Although some of the editorials I have read are best suited for that..:)

  14. I've cut down and now only get the lovely big Saturday paper delivered. I cut out the rest as I was pretty much completely getting my news online so I thought I'd save the cash (and the trees). Now I'm not even reading the Saturday one, I look under the coffee table right now and there are the last 3 weeks of them (can you tell I'm not compulsively tidy?) and they've never been opened except for the 'magazine' insert as Rory grabs it to do the Braintrainer quiz with me at some stage each Saturday. I hate that I don't read the paper anymore - it used to be a luxury for me, it was the 10 minute treat (with coffee) between the chores on Saturday.

  15. Oh, yeah, sure, I read the paper. ONLINE. Gah!

  16. OMG Lori - see I am missing out on EVERYTHING!!! I did not know this!! I would dearly miss our Sun - we get the Province but I never read it (frikken tabloid - hubby likes the sports). Not that I am that fond of the Global newsteam but that's a whole other topic -- but they are who I turn to in the morning to see if my world is still standing. Sighs.

What is sad is that we use the internet to follow international news - love that I can read all over the world whenever I want and choose what I want to read - but my goodness the little nuggets that are hidden in the Sun would be missed dearly. Actually that front picture of Mrs Poole with the Olympic mittens made me tear up reading how she is taking her late husband's place on the torch run and bringing mittens to everyone in his tiny home town.
