Listen to me my friends... no really, really listen. I want every one of you to go into a drawer, cupboard, closet or pile in your house right now and choose one thing to get rid of. Toss it. Yup toss it out. Unless you know you are going to actually take a pile to a charity or have a pickup scheduled already you are going to toss it in the trash or recycle bin. Trust me. Nobody wants your stuff. You don't even want it. Then you know what. You are going to do the same thing next week. Choose something and remove it from your home. Keep doing this week after week. You will thank me for this wisdom one day when you are going to move.
Garage sales are usually a total waste of your time and energy. We carried so much stuff down the stairs and outside. Lots of it was heavy. We were sweating like waterfalls. We were exhausted before we even started.
We sold a bit of stuff but it really wasn’t worth it. Not worth our energy. Not worth our time. Not worth the frustration. Not worth the jerk who looked up our address online and phoned the house the day before to see what kind of stereo equipment we were selling. He then showed up 25 minutes early on a sale that specifically said do not come early and wanted to scope out the stereo equipment. I told him to get out of the driveway and wait until 9:00 like everyone else had to. When his buddy walked up at ten to nine and said let’s go in my husband heard him say…”no…she yelled at me”. Lol.
Well my friends. There you have it. My advise. My wisdom. My experience. Purge that house one piece at a time. Start now and when you have to move some day you will not have to entertain the insanity of a garage sale.
I hate garage sales too. I have not had good luck with them either.
ReplyDeleteA-G-R-E-E-D! Totally exhausting and people really can be a pain!
ReplyDeleteI have a plan after the greenhouse season when I have time to do housework again, to clean one room at a time and totally purge that room--not one item at a time, but one room at a time.
ReplyDeleteA friend was having a yard sale and her husband dared her to price some stuff at a nickel just to see if people would ask her to come down on it - and she did - and they did.
ReplyDeleteIf there is something big we want to get rid of and our kids don't want/need it - and we don't want to cart it off to Goodwill, we put it at the end of the driveway with a free sign and it is always gone within an hour.
Someone said we shouldn't put free signs out - we should give it to Goodwill - well I figured that out fast - I am giving it away and I don't care who I give it to. If we have a bag of things that is easily transported we'll take it to Goodwill so they can make money - but otherwise - free it is. And they almost always take the sign - so no clean up. LOL
the joys of garage sales, yes, I remember it well and will never have one again. You are so right my friend, no body wants your junk, not even you! Good luck and best wishes with the move. I didn't know you have found a new house...congrats.
ReplyDeleteI always figured it's better to give it away than to have someone try to "bargain" me down from $1!!! I know I wouldn't have the patience for that! Sounds like you're making progress though:@)
ReplyDeleteI agree garage sales are a waste of time - usually the people are uninteresting as well! I keep thinking of how much I could accomplish at home instead of saving a few dollars on something I will likely throw out next year.
ReplyDeleteAmen and amen!
ReplyDeleteI have downsized soooo much, and I don't regret a single item that I discarded or gave away.
Great advice!!!
Great advice! My problem is, 5 minutes after I throw it out, I need it LOL!
