WE WERE YOUNG, WE WERE STARDUST

I was still in elementary school in the 60's just starting grade 8 in 1969 but I have always loved the rock music from that time. Not the the beach music (sorry Shellebelle) but the kind of music Eric Burdon & the Animals put out. The Kinks, The Doors, The Seeds, The Byrds, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick to name a few.
I remember sitting on a big blanket in the sun, getting my tan on,  listening to a little tinny sounding transistor radio and saying "I love this song" to almost every song that came on. I remember dancing like the go-go dancers with their little white boots.
Into the 70's I still liked the rockers. Led Zeppelin,  Lynyrd  Skynyrd, Deep Purple, but also bands like the Moody Blues, Creedence Clearwater, and a huge Canadian band The Guess Who.
What brings me to this post is the passing of actor Dennis Hopper. I went to see the movie Easy Rider after it came out in 1969. (remember going Wendy??) I was so in love with Peter Fonda.
Wendy and I went into downtown Vancouver to the hippie area of Gastown and we bought posters from the movie. They were the only posters I ever put up on my walls other than playbills from rock bands that came through.
I still have my Woodstock album but have given away all my other vinyl. Everything is on cd now and I have a huge playlist on my Ipod. We have satellite radio at home and of course I listen to the 60's all the time,  usually pretty loud.
As if that isn't enough of the music I also have a DJ playlist on BLIP.FM. My DJ name is lorenglish and you can go there and listen to my whole list of my music picks, many with old old film clips of the performers on shows like Ed Sullivan or Hullabaloo.
Now go put on your go-go boots, your mini skirt, black eyeliner and white lipstick and get dancing.

WEDDING INVITATIONS - METAMORPHOSIS MONDAY

I have decided to join in with Jan at Bobbypins Boardwalk for her Bragfest because honestly I think I should be bragging about the great invitations that I got to help with. It was such a treat to work on them and the bride, Leah deserves a big pat on the back for these.

I am joining in for Metamorphosis Monday over at Between Naps on the Porch with Susan. Please join us and see all the creative ideas out there. You will be amazed at what they all come up with.

A few months ago I received an email from one of my son's friends, Leah. She asked me if I could help her with her wedding invitations. She wanted to make them herself.
Could I? Oh my gosh yes!!! I was so pleased to be asked. What an honour.
I have two sons and never get to do the girlie stuff with anyone. I was excited.
She had some ideas to start with and we emailed back and forth for a while before we went out to the stores. We went first to Essential Packaging. I have posted about them before HERE and HERE. I won a great prize from them last year.

As often happens when shopping for ideas you end up with your brain spinning and full. We went to a couple other places that day and came up with a game plan and a decision on colors and style. Black Onyx which has a bit of sparkle to it, off white and fuchsia pink. The design is called a pocket fold and a pocket on the right side for holding directions, r.s.v.p. cards etc.
Leah and I met a couple times to go over details and then it came time for the ladies in the wedding party to come over and help with the assembly.  We spent quite a few hours working on these.
We decided to put a beautiful little bird on one side and we embossed it with a silver sparkle to match the sparkle in the black paper.Leah ordered the bird stamp and also a stamp made with their names on it. She got the embossing powder and stamping ink. The pink card stock is the background piece for the off white page with the wording on it. It is also sparkly. It will create a narrow pink frame around the white.
First we stamped the birds on the pocket and then sprinkled it with the embossing powder. Next we used a heat gun to activate the embossing powder which is basically a powdered glass that melts under the heat of the gun to created a raised, glossy image.
One woman stamped all the cards that were cut out while another cut out the strips of pink ribbon needed to wrap around the cards. It was really a challenge to get the stamps straight and even.
Don't worry we ironed all strips of ribbons straight and pretty. She had to make sure there were no stray strands from the cut ends.
So with the ribbon wrapped right around the outside of the pocket fold we finished off the end with the little cards. The ribbon matched the pink card stock perfectly.
We did lots of them. Quite a production line we had going. You would not believe the amount of glue tape we went through. That stuff is not cheap.
Now time to add the actual invitation to the pocket fold and the little cards into the pocket.
Aren't those little birds cute? I know. You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find a nice bird stamp in the right size. Sorry, I whited out the names to protect the privacy of those involved. It was done in the Paint program on the computer. I didn't destroy an actual invitation.
The camera makes the black look way more sparkly than it is. Actually it is really subtle and elegant.
This is the finished invitation. This was so much fun for me and I truly was honoured to be asked to help with this special project. Leah was so easy to work with. She went with the flow and adapted to the changes as they needed to be made.  No Bridezilla here!!!!
Leah came by with a lovely card and some Australian wines (where the groom's family is from) to thank me for helping. What a sweetheart. Isn't that card cute? It says " a little note to say thanks" and there is a tiny little note on the card. Love it.
Think I am going to love these too.

SILLY SUNDAY

Two men were talking. 'So, how's your sex life?'
'Oh, nothing special. I'm having Pension sex.'
'Pension sex?'
'Yeah, you know; I get a little each month, but not enough to live on!'

IT MAY BE PRETTY BUT I WON'T EAT IT

Join in at Designs by Gollum hosted by Michael Lee. See all the mouthwatering posts out there.

One of my sons loves sushi. He often picks some up from a local restaurant that he feels has the best sushi around here. He drops in here to eat it because he doesn't live that close to it. We don't live in a big suburb but within a 1 minute drive we have 5 sushi restaurants and if you drive for 5-10 minutes you can add another dozen to the bunch.
I don't eat it. I don't find it the least bit appetizing but I do think it is a thing of beauty. Here are two of the things he had last night.
These are called Crazy Boy rolls. They are made up of spicy tuna, crab, and asparagus with an eel sauce and black sesame seeds.
The ones below are called crispy rolls. They have prawn, avocado and crab with a peanut wasabi sauce.

I don't eat shellfish at all. Ever. But I do like the way this looks.

LAW ENFORCEMENT APPRECIATION WEEK

Thanks Mike
Right now there's a police officer helping someone. A police officer is working the streets -- day or night -- to keep you safe. A police officer is missing their family while caring for yours. In the minute it took you to read this, police officers all over the world are saving lives.
This week is Law Enforcement Appreciation Week. Please feel free to copy and paste this if you are a police officer, love a police officer, or appreciate a police officer.

I know I really do appreciate the sacrifice that the police make  while protecting us. The chance they take every single day to be ready for that call to help someone. To make it safer for all of us. I think we need to appreciate them every single day not just for one week.

MONDAY MOANS

How does the weekend go by so fast? What did I get done? This whole working full time thing is 3 months old now and I am just blown away as to how little time I have to get things done now.

I had offered to help someone move Saturday morning and she was very thankful that I offered. I turned down lunch with my niece and her husband in order to be home to help this woman. She was supposed to phone me Saturday morning. She said she really could use some help.
You know what? She didn't even phone. I hung around the house waiting but nothing. Thanks a bunch.

Here is something new to me. Having to wait almost a week to return something to a store. This store closes before I get off work. They don't open early enough either so I will have to wait until Thursday or Friday night at to return something that was bought on the weekend. How do all of you do it? This is just a pain.

Every time we get a new person delivering the local paper they put it someplace else. The latest one just tosses it on the walkway to the house. Is it asking too much to get the paper at the doorstep? Really? I would normally tell you myself but I am at work full time and no longer see you in the afternoon.

Do you sense a theme here? It is Monday and I am heading back to work for the week. I miss the freedom I had. I actually worked harder at home than I do at work but I really miss the flexibility that I had for 20+ years. Wah.

SUNDAY FAVORITES - ROOSTER PARTY

Chari at Happy to Design is hosting Sunday Favorites and it is always a great place to visit. Join in and show us a post from the past in case we missed it or have forgotten all about it. This one is from last August. What great fun it was to see everybody's rooster collections.
Thanks for dropping by.
_______________________________________________________________
There is  a rooster party going on at Bella Vista hosted by Barb. This is such a popular theme because there is just something about roosters that seem to draw us all in.
I didn't intend to collect roosters and in fact I don't. I just seem to end up with a lot of them.

The large picture here was painted by me. It is part of a vegetable storage bin. The chicken wire is actually painted on. Now starting at the top smaller photos there is my doorstop, utensil jar, jug from Portugal, kitchen hook, plate, S&P shakers and double hook.

This painting was done by the friend of the lady at a local apple orchard. It was in their store. When I asked if it was for sale she hesitated and he said YES. I felt really uncomfortable buying it as she seemed to not want to part with it. Smaller pictures are from the top, bucket, wood carving, wire roosters, Betty Crocker dishes, utensil jar, plate and shelf.
I do have a few more rooster items but thought of them after I was done with these. I guess they have just become part of the household and I don't notice them all the time.

WHAT WERE THE PARENTS THINKING?

There is a video clip of a dance troupe who are performing Beyonce's song Single Ladies. You can see it HERE on Anderson Cooper, CNN.  They are really good dancers. They have worked hard to learn this routine I am sure. There were probably many rehearsals. I am sure many of their parents were involved in the process. Involved in the costumes. So here is my question...
WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?
These little girls are 7 years old and they are gyrating in skimpy costumes. This has been filmed and put on YouTube.  I am just stunned that none of the parents put a stop to this.
Hip Hop dancing is a great style and can be age appropriate. There are many songs they could have chosen that would not be so sexual.
SHAME, SHAME, SHAME
ON THE PARENTS, THE DANCE INSTRUCTOR(S) AND THE
DANCE STUDIO.
SHAME ON THE PERSON WHO RECORDED THIS AND POSTED IT
ON THE INTERNET.
Now I know I have put up a link for you to see this. I could have put the actual YouTube clip on here but chose not to but thought you could see it at CNN's site along with the conversation that goes with this issue. What is your opinion on this? Have you ever come across a situation that required you to step in and put a stop to it? Have you ever pulled your kids out of something because of the inappropriate things going on?

LITTLE GREEN MEN

Our local hockey team, The Vancouver Canucks, are in a playoff game tonight. This is do or die game. The fan base here is very large. Even though I am not a hockey fan I do wish them well.
We have a couple of super-fans here though. They are the Green Men and they have become a phenomenon at the games. Here is a clip to introduce you to these guys. I have heard some of the other teams are copying our Green Guys.
How lame is that. You will never measure up to the originals....enjoy.

WELL NOW THAT IS ANNOYING

 http://www.freefoto.com/preview/41-07-89

You know what is really annoying? There is a crosswalk next to my house in a traffic light controlled intersection. Why do people think they have to push the freakin' crosswalk button a bunch of times. Bang, bang, bang....Are you so stupid that you think the first time you push it that it (there, someone just pushed it four times while I was writing this) doesn't believe you? Nah she just pushed it twice. I don't think she really wants to cross. Let's not change until she hits the button 6 more times. Then we are sure she wants to cross.
No it won't change instantly. Cars are going by in the other direction and the light will change in the allotted time frame. You will get the little "walk" light and then you can cross the street. The light doesn't suddenly think that WOW 10 people must want to cross so I had better change to walk really fast. Really people...this is annoying. Stop it!

ASPARAGUS WITH BALSAMIC AND BASIL

Lucy from My Secrets for Happiness had demanded asked nicely for me to post my recipe for asparagus that I bragged about. This one is such a hit. The recipe was originally printed in our newspaper.

ASPARAGUS WITH BALSAMIC AND BASIL
Click here for a printable recipe

1 1/2 pounds of asparagus, trimmed
1/4 cup olive oil
5 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt & pepper
pinch brown sugar
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
2 shallots, chopped fine

Place asparagus in a large frypan in a small amount of boiling salted water. Cook covered for 3-5 minutes, or until tender. (do not overcook) Drain and put into an ice water bath to cool quickly. Drain and place in a shallow dish.
In small bowl, combine vinegar, brown sugar and shallots. Gradually whisk in oil, then salt and pinch of pepper. Whisk in basil.
Pour vinaigrette over asparagus, turning gently to coat. Cover and let stand for about 1 hour. Sprinkle lightly with pepper.
Serves 6 (not in my house, lol)

YOU JUST NEVER KNOW

Have you ever found out something about a friend, family member or coworker that has completely surprised you?
I was at at a get together last night for my supervisor who has left the company. We all met up at a local pub for some drinks and a bit of dinner.
This man is quite a bit younger than me. He was a good supervisor and I learned a lot from him. He was always in a dress shirt at work and very professional. This was my first time seeing him outside of work. He was in a t-shirt. He looked very relaxed and casual. He had tatoos up and down both arms......what......back up the bus. He is inked from wrists to shoulders. I was very surprised.
I was very surprised. Oh sure everybody gets tattoos nowadays. I wouldn't have been surprised to see one or two but full sleeves of tatties? Lets just say I was very surprised.
My father had tattoos up and down his arms too. I never thought anything of it. I don't care if someone is tattooed. Whatever. But you know what? I really think that if this young man wore short sleeved shirts to work he would be perceived very differently. He would be judged by his tatties and not his work ethic and his abilities. I think that is sad.
Granted one makes that choice when they get tattoos but I think that is too bad. They are judged by something that has nothing to do with their capabilities or ethics.
So I wonder how many of your long sleeved acquaintances or coworkers may be hiding a little ink from the world.
Are you? Me? Maybe one of your kids? You just never know.

THE KITTIES ARE NOT MINE

Someone asked me if the kitties in the previous post were mine. Now look at me. Do I look like I would have all those cats? No. Of course I don't.
Besides it would be weird to have all those empty boxes around wouldn't it?

TALK ABOUT A HOT ROD

My BB Guy went to a seminar up in Kelowna, B.C. last week and he was asked to man the barbecues for one evening. The barbecues belong to the owner of an auto body chain who helped with the cooking.
These "Car-B-Ques" are so cool. You would not  believe how much they cost to make. What man wouldn't love one of these. He would be the envy of  the whole neighborhood.
I love the flames up the fenders. Perfect for the grill.
I can hear Hank Hill and the boys going "Yup" "Uh huh" all over these.
