I was going to put a comment poll on my site but after the recent scare around here with gadgets I am pretty gun shy.
I, like any other blogger love comments. It is like chatting with my coffee group that most of you have heard of (except they are way more rude than you guys)
I almost always reply to every comment I get by emailing back. I know that some people reply to each comment in the comment section of the blog.
My theory is that you won't necessarily come back to the comments to see my reply so I should email you.
What do you think? Do you reply in the comments? More importantly do you ever go back to see if someone has written a reply there? Do you prefer an email response? Do you expect any response?
Someone just mentioned to me that they are getting a lot of spam and filthy comments so they word verify and moderate.
Did you know you can go to your dashboard and click on "comments" and from there you check the little box to the left of the offending comment and then click on "spam". They will be blocked. If you block someone by mistake you can go to the next tab "spam" and unblock them.
Oh I'm first. Oh boy.
ReplyDeleteWell...giggle, I still hate those blogs that make me jump through hoops to leave a comment. Well did you really think that would change?
I love to email comments back to people, it's more private, and I feel like I am communicating directly with them. Since I rarely look back on the old posts for answers to my comments, that works well for me.
Now about those comment moderations thingys. LOL.

If someone asks a question, and they have an email to reply, I answer their question that way. Who remembers to go back to a blog to get an answer!
ReplyDeleteBUT, I don't think an email comment takes the place of commenting on the blog.
I like to be able to go back to old posts and read the comments. It is like a little history.
I have read ques like this before, and overwhelmingly people like the comment ON the blog. Answer ques via email!
I have a ques for you, oh Techie wizard.
I have noticed lately that if I try to reply to a question, I get "no reply blogger". Some still have their name in an email, but more and more , the no reply thing!
I'm no help, cause I do ALL of the above. I go back, sometimes. I email my commenters, sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI think your emailing all comments is very sweet and I appreciated when you wrote me.
So, yes, no, maybe - - -
If I have asked a question i try to go back to see if has been answered - soemtimes I get an email which is nice.
ReplyDeleteHave to admit - I try to answer questions on the comment section and if I have the time will email - if there is an email address.
Lots of help wasn't I - LOL
I ALWAYS email a response. I think if someone takes enough time to comment, I should take the time to acknowledge, and like you said, it's more like chatting.
ReplyDeleteI also do not like jumping through hoops to comment. I am sure many of my comments have not been recorded because the blogger has a set up that jumps the comment to the bottom of the page and then you have to do a word verification by returning to the bottom of the page...I don't go back to those places.
With the advanced blocking they have now on blogger, I do not even use word verification. I like to make it simple to talk with me.
I never, ever go back to see if someone has commented on my comment.
Just a PS on comment authorization. I have had, and still have, where we have to type in those annoying letters that sometimes make up funny words. Lately I had to add comment moderation. I resisted, but, then, the "mmmm, not so funny, errr, sicko" comments started. As a service to my readers, I had to up the anty. I don't want them finding links to Chinese porno site in my comments.
ReplyDeleteI don't like all this typing in extra letters and moderating, but, the sickos out there force the issue. I am very sorry to lose readers because they don't like the hassle, but, oooooo, do I understand. SIGH
hmmm. I'm not known for leaving comments often. But when I do it's because I really wanted to contribute.I tend to read all my blogs & RSS feeds from within Google Reader & if I want to leave a comment...I have to do so outside of Reader. So it's an extra couple of hoops to jump through, but it's no big hurdle.
ReplyDeleteI read way more blogs than I actually follow too - so it's not always easy to leave a comment on everyone's blogs for every post. Not all posts are worthy of a comment either on some blogs.
With Google analytics & things like Sitemeter - folks can tell if I've been regularly reading their blogs...even if I read thru Reader. So that should give them some comfort.
But to your question...I think most comments could be responded to within the comment section. Otherwise it can look like a question went overlooked by the blog owner to other blog readers...& sometimes the comment section is where all the action is at. In my case, if I do go outside of Reader to leave a comment...then I tend to go back for another day or so to said blog comment section to see what other comments were posted if I think it's relevant or that the blog owner may respond. I don't expect an email generally. If I get an email - cool. But I don't expect it. Plus I have umpteen email addresses - some I regularly change or delete to keep ahead of spam so I never know what blog owner has what email for me on any given day! LOL
Hi Lori: If some leaves me a reply on their blog I never see it as I do not go back. If you are blogging to a meme that has 100 listings who has time to go back. I barely make it through the first time. I always email back a comment using my personal email. Maybe that is not a good thing. Don't like spam.
ReplyDeleteLucy- If I ask a question, I want someone to answer me via an e-mail or on through a comment on my blog. I do NOT want to go back to a blog to look for an answer or a comment on my comment- IMHO,it's too much trouble to go searchin. PLUS- half the time I don't remember what I asked of whom !!! (aging brain...)
ReplyDeleteAs for comment moderation, I think that is okay. I don't need instant gratification to know that my comment is being published. However, I HATE word verification. I also don't get why a person would have both word verification AND comment moderation. Spam is handled quite well these days on Blogger. Having the two is unnecessary.
I like what you are currently doing- If you have something to say to me, you fire me off an e-mail. If you don't wanna talk, you ignore me! LOL
hugs, Ethel
Well, I have started leaving more comments over the last month. As for watching for replies, where it's shown I try to remember to check of that box that will E-Mail me whenever anything is added. As for my own blog - no fancy word check, no verification - I have only had three silly spam type commets in the last year - (Probably pure luck) - which were taken care of within a few hours. Naturally - things could change in the future. Also sometimes I will reply to comments in my own blog - sometimes as a new comment - sometimes as an E-Mail. All depends on the subject. Hey - have a BIG wave! Grin.
ReplyDeleteDon't think I can add much to this discussion. I really prefer to email responses rather than leave one on a post, though I will do that if necessary. I don't allow anonymous comments and that took care of the trash I had started getting.
ReplyDeleteSometimes i check back but people are so busy i don't mind if there isn't a response. I don't always respond to mine because I figure most people won't check back. I am just thrilled to get comments and I try to visit back at least.
