I am famous for buying more of something at the grocery store that I already have in the pantry. I am very short and can't even see what is on the top shelf let alone reach it. Besides if I am getting one of something I might as well get two. You never know when all the grocery stores in the world will disappear on the same day and I won't have a tin of green peppercorns from Madagascar to make a sauce for my steak. 
I luckily had a tall person here to empty out the top shelf for me.
I don't have "food" so much as I have "ingredients". Always the promise of good things. None of the commitment.
Then there are the expired products. Now I will have a record of when it was clean and tidy so that I can see how long I can keep it up. Enough writing. I need to go to the grocery store.

Oh good grief- if I counted the number of cans of pineapple I have in the pantry, I think I would be able to make 10 pineapple upside down cakes! Not to mention the number of taco seasoning packets and cans of petite diced tomatoes that I buy every darn time I shop! But do I have any canned milk to make my favorite cream sauce? Heck no! Lists! I need to make lists!!! aagghh...... Can someone say my organizational skills are sadly lacking?
Ha - I think its an Canadian thing. My parents lived there for several years (during which time I was born, so I'm a fellow canuck) and Mum always has a fully stocked larder. She says she got into the habit in Canada because of the winters. You never knew when you'd get snowed in. They lived in a remote area, so it was an issue. However, now she lives in Ireland, walking distance from a supermarket, and it's the same thing...perhaps she's afraid she'll get rained in!
Feel better? I always do! Although truth be told, it's the other people that I live with who don't get my system!
Organization makes me HAPPY! I need to do this to a few of my cabinets. I've been slacking!
Ah, the peril of those wonderfully spacious American kitchens is...all that space! I manage to avoid clutter by living in a very cramped British flat. I can hardly fit myself into the kitchen to cook dinner (as you can see, there are downsides to this lifestyle).
