That is the question today. About 4 a.m. you hear a female screaming. There is a lot of screaming.
What would you do?
Several years ago, about a 5 minute drive from here if there is no traffic, a young woman was screaming for her life and no one called the police even though they heard her. NO ONE. She was raped and killed.
Last night or should I say this morning at about 4:00 a.m. I was woken up by the screaming, loud and long, of a female. I was sleeping at the front of the house in the guest room due my coughing.
I was down the stairs, out the front door with the phone in my hands in a flash. Barefoot, in my pyjamas.
Across the street, half a block down was a girl at the bus stop shrieking over and over again. She was by herself so I didn’t go right down to her. I called 911 and they kept me on the phone. They had multiple people phoning in.
Every time I went a little closer my phone would start cutting out and the dispatcher said to stay where she could stay in contact with me.
By this time my 24 year old son was out there with me. The girl started to wander back and forth across the street then went behind a building. My son went nearer to her and she was crying and saying “ I want to go home” and “help me”.
He kept his distance a bit because we didn’t know what we were dealing with and we also didn’t want the police to taser him by mistake. I advised dispatch that the male there was my son.
The police were on their way and by this time two more people showed up in their cars. They lived further away and came to see what was going on.
She was not ignored. Her screams brought in multiple calls to the police and people showed up to help.
Finally the police arrived, 3 cars. She was young. She said she was raped. I had my son and the other woman who was there at this time move further away from her while she spoke with the police. We didn’t need to be voyeurs into this part of her life.
The key here is that many people called the police and 4 of us showed up to help.

Praise the Lord there are people out there like you!
ReplyDeleteOh that poor girl. I am so glad you came o her rescue. I hope she is ok. I don't know how people can ignore situations like that, at least call 911 if they don't want to get closer...Christine
ReplyDeleteThat was my first thought - - - call the police. I am always astounded when I hear of crimes on busy city streets and not one soul lifts a finger to even call the police.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to know what to do sometimes, isn't it. I'm glad you and others were able to assist.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that so many people tried to help. What a very scary situation.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for getting involved.
ReplyDeleteI commend you and your son for coming to her aid. It must be a good feeling to know that your neighbors do not look the other way, in the event that you yourself ever need their help.
ReplyDeleteWELL! O.O How very kind of you to help out! Its good to know there are people out there taht care... :) MAkes teh world go round!
ReplyDeleteI had an experience like this once, It was a man and woman fighting outside and tehy were screaming at each other. the man had locked up her purse in his car and she kept hollering form him to give it back. Then he grabbed her and held on, and they were both making a huge racket outside. They woke us (Me and my oldest) up and we immediately phoned in teh police. (Who later poked in to take an alibi) Needlessly, we watched the man get arrested and teh girl... was screaming at the top of her lungs that people should... mind their own business... O.o? I was shocked to hear that.. she was actually MAD (she didnt know who called and sadly, I was the only one, so the police said)But they were fighting in an open (and empty) parking lot at 2am... well damn, that threw me off... BUT, im still glad I did it, and the olice agreed, they said we did the right thing. :)
So nice to see so many people caring for that poor girl thouigh!
I also missed your last post, I hope youre feeling better! Youknow what? try 2 tablesoppns of apple cider vinegar diluted in 2 cups of water... works miracles that does! Usually, it would be 2 teaspoons, but if your sick, you up the ACV! :) Hope it helps!
Hugs,
Without question, you did the right thing! We had a case in New York many years ago that was similar to the one you described. Even if it turns out to be nothing, the best best is always to make sure.
ReplyDeleteYou also did the right thing to back off once the police arrived on scene by allowing this young girl her privacy.
The world would be a much better place if we all looked out for each other, kudos to you and your community for stepping up to the plate!
Good for you Lori. You did the right thing. Hopefully she will be okay. V
ReplyDeleteQuite a scary situation. Good for you and the others for doing the right thing!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! Too often these days people don't want to get involved, but I just think about being on the other end and I would certainly want someone to help if it were me or a loved one in trouble.
ReplyDeleteYou did the right thing Lori. That poor girl! I'm so glad you got involved and called the police. I would have done the same thing....
ReplyDeleteWow. That's amazing, and you did the right thing. So many people would not have done that. :(
ReplyDeleteYou are a hero! I'm so proud of you! Poor girl.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I am making your diaper cake for a shower this summer.
AND, Yes I do read your blog on a regular basis!!
