STARVE IT OR FEED IT

You all know the old adage. Well at least we think we know it. Which do we starve and which do we feed?
I think we feed a cold and starve a fever what with all that chicken soup for a cold business. Am I right?

I fought the big fight against a cold for a few weeks but in the end the cold won. For me it has gone right into my chest and I am coughing a lot. The timing has me furious as I had a 3 day weekend and hoped to get lots done. I didn't. I napped a lot though. That was good.
The coughing leads to a sore throat and a sore chest and back. The coughing leads to peeing. I am making sure that my bladder is empty all the time in case a fit of coughing strikes. Should be fun at work today.
One of my co-workers told me to cut up an orange and put a slice across my teeth like we would as kids and just suck on it to get the juice to run down my throat and do you know what. It stopped my coughing.

She also told me to make an infusion of thyme and hot water and put that by my bed at bedtime and that would also help. I never did get around to that.

I did have to break down and get some cough syrup Friday but other than that I don't usually medicate a cold. Except for Vicks Vaporub. That I do use on my chest.

What cures do you guys use to alleviate your cold symptoms? Do they work or do you just do them because your mother did them for you when you were little?

  1. I swear by Lemon Tea. I was really sick over the holidays and having a cup of hot tea seemed to sooth the cough and keep me warmed through. I started this in college after a friend made it for me. Even if someone scientifically proved it had no health effect, it tastes wonderful. My boys like to have it for that reason alone.

Lemon tea - put 1/2 a lemon in 12-16 oz water. Microwave about 3 minutes until almost boiling (or boil on the stove). Remove from microwave (heat). Using a pot holder and spoon, carefully squeeze the juice and pulp from the lemon and discard the rind. Add as much honey as you like - local honey is best. I have a sweet tooth and use a lot!

  2. Well, we use chicken soup and lemon tea - but here's a little tidbit for you: did you know that Vick's Vaporub gets rid of toenail fungus (you know that awful gunk that makes old people's toenails thick and ugly)? It's amazing but true!!

  3. I rely on over the counter medications, but your tip about the oranges sounds interesting.

  4. LOL!!! I've thought about this often and simply do not KNOW which way it is SUPPOSED to be - - - so since I like to eat, I'll feed them BOTH.

Logic would tell me to STARVE a fever for it requires energy to HAVE a fever - - - so rather like a fire if you took away the fuel it should starve the fever - - - but these things are RARELY logical.

  5. Poor you! I hope your better soon. Seems the bugs are getting tougher. Or modern living is making our immune systems weaker, considering how long the average cold seems to last nowadays. I had two colds within a six week period starting in December. A rarity for me. The best I could do was up my vit. C and zinc intake and hope for the best.

  6. If you are hungry , eat!
    I hope you feel better.
I heard you should rub some Vicks on the soles of your feet too. Can't hurt! :)

  7. I hope your feeling better. I'm a nightquil fan. Through the day I mostly suffer through, with a bit of tea to relax the throat. I'm still waiting for that one of a kind miracle cure though... :)

My blog has moved! Come by for a visit when you get a chance! www.FlorabyLaura.ca

  8. Hot toddies! I learned about these from my Aunt Joy. The 14-year-old me thought they were the neatest thing ever.

  9. Ick! Sorry you're under the weather. We all had it over the last two weeks. I am not even exaggerating when I say I had this crud for a good 10 days or so. I like Airborne for when it feels like it's coming on and Nyquil when it gets here.
I also like wine no matter what.

  10. I love the smell of VICs.....I always plaster it
under my nose when I can't breath, LOL.
I love cough drops and suck on them like they
are going out of style. I agree with Kathleen,
just eat if you are hungry (I love this type of
diet) Hugs (but only air hugs - as I don't want
    your cold/sickness..hee hee ?)

  11. I use a combination of all of the above mentioned remedies, actually. Plus a few added ones, and mother-taught tips.
Chicken soup + lots of oranges + tea tree oil (3 drops in a spoonful of honey) + vapor rub + vitamin C. Oh and lots of steam, don't let the house/room air get too dry, that's what triggers throat cough.

For more serious pulmonary troubles I go with antibiotics. But only if there's fever involved.

    Hope you get better SOON!!
    Hugs

  12. Eliminate dairy as much as you can--it produces mucus which makes things worse. Find some mullein and make a cup of tea. It's wonderful for chest congestion. You can find it at health food stores in leaf or tincture form. At night, rub that Vick's on the bottoms of your feet and put on socks. I promise it will stop your coughing! Use some of those nose strips for snoring. Take care of yourself!! Hope you're feeling better soon.

  13. Thanks for the orange tip - I'll try it next time. Hot toddies definitely, whiskey, honey, aspririn, hot water and a clove. Sublime! Get better soon.

  14. I am a firm believer in COLD FX! Try it. It's great. Not much help for the cough, though. The oranges probably work better to keep the cough to a dull roar :)

    Get better soon!

  15. My medicine is hot water with honey, lemon and ginger, sipped slowly,to help a sore throat, followed by a stiff whisky to forget the cold.!!!
I have an apology to make to you.I changed my computer some time ago and in setting it up I lost all my blog contacts.I found most of them but but could not get yours. After all this time,it suddenly came back today,I hope you did not think I had stopped following you.

  16. Lucy, I'm sorry you have been a sickie! I like the warmth of Menthlatum on my chest when I'm congested with a cold. It's similar to Vicks but not quite as stinky! I'm really not sure it works, but it just feels good. I think my grandmother used to use this "remedy" on us. I tend to get bronchitis when I catch a cold, then have to go on antibiotics. Until then, nothing really helps. I used to get sick every July and December- without fail! Then I went on a regime of allergy shots and it has made all the difference. The occasional cold can turn really bad for me so I'm diligent about washing my hands as much and as often as I can. Geez, I sound paranoid!! Hope you feel better soon. hugs, Ethel
