I had recently switched from embedded comments to comments with a pop-up window because I had read that people had trouble commenting on the embedded ones since the reply to comment update came into play.
From the moment I switched I started getting spam comments. I used to get maybe one every 8 months or so and suddenly I was getting 5-8 per day, every day.
I get an email notification for every comment left so I knew they were coming in but luckily the Spam detector worked and they were all caught and not posted. I don’t use word verification and never will (hopefully).
Now yesterday I switched back to the embedded comments and today…..no spam….none. Coincidence? Maybe. Might be too soon to tell. I really want to keep anonymous comments available because lots of my readers are not bloggers and they don’t have any other way of leaving a comment.
I’ll keep you posted. Maybe you can let me know if you can comment and also if you get lots of spam. Do you have embedded comments or pop-ups?
I also changed to the pop up for just a bit because of all the problems. I received spam, too. I don't care for the pop up thing at all.
ReplyDeleteSo back to embedded I go.
Have a great day!
Barb
Just today I had a WordPress reader write to me and told me she is having lots of trouble leaving comments on embedded threads. Her comments lead me to this thread on Blogger Help (putting a URL here, just so ya know)::

I have been chatting with friends on G+ and on FB about this VERY issue today.
I have had a number of issues with spammers, prior to the switch to threaded embedded. I have email moderation/notification ON. I had captcha OFF, but, the spam got up to 10 a day or MORE AND, they then started hitting on my second blog too.
I put captcha back ON, the spam went away. Several weeks pass, I took captcha off, within MINUTES the spam started once again, so captcha went back ON, where it stays now. :-((
I have been all over the universe with this captcha, moderation and now, the embedded threads. For now it is:
Captcha ON
Moderation ON
And, I think it is gonna be FULL page comments for the time being.
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Hm, thats interesting... Ive had pop up comments and Ive gotten the spam but I have no problems deleting them out since I read before posts :) Good luck with yours!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
This is interesting. When I got into a "hangout" with a blogger developer, he wanted to know why I was using popups for my comments. He suggested that I use embedded because the new reply function only works with that right now. I immediately switched, it's been about three weeks, and I've had no problem with embedded.
ReplyDeleteThat's so weird! You wouldn't expect changing the format for how you comment would make it easier for spammers. :/
ReplyDeleteMine is a popup and all my spam gets caught and doesn't post! I prefer it but I have no trouble with either one. =)
ReplyDeleteHi,Laurie. I'm commenting just to test if I can comment. That's kind of like talking to hear the sound of my voice. Have a great day!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sigrun. I appreciated the test. What browser do you use? Internet Explorer? Google Chrome? Firefox?
DeleteLori, I have the pop-up window and no problems, whatsoever. The reason I like this function is because you can minimize the window and refer back to the actual blog post. I don't like excessive scrolling to the top of the post if I'm # 60 on the comment list. I also don't like the function that opens a page where I can't see the page at all. In that instance, if you click back to the actual blog page, you lose your comment if you're in the middle of it. I have no idea why you would be getting all of that spam. Weird coincidence? Ethel
ReplyDeleteSue, just a quick note, on Blogger, I now have full page comments, and there is a line near the top that allows you to view the entire blog along side the comment edit section. It reads, "Show Entire Post". On my blog, it shows as blue. :-)
DeleteDitto here too, thanks for posting this, as I will now change back to embedded comments and hope that the spam stops. Jo x
