HOW TO GIVE YOUR CAT A PILL

I am re-posting this from last year especially for Jen at Muddy Boot Dreams who had a sick kitty on her hands and was having some trouble giving his pills to him.
 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nasty_cat_!.jpg

1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa.Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

 3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

 4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and pushpill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth  shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of  wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

 6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

 7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

 8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

 9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

 10. Retrieve cat from neighbour's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door on to neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon.Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

 11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw Tee shirt away and fetch new
 one from bedroom.

 12. Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from across the road. Apologize to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

 13. Tie the little bastard's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followedby large piece of filet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash  pill down.

 14. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

 15. Arrange for SPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

How To Give A Dog A Pill
 1. Wrap it in bacon.
 2. Toss it in the air.

STARVE IT OR FEED IT

You all know the old adage. Well at least we think we know it. Which do we starve and which do we feed?
I think we feed a cold and starve a fever what with all that chicken soup for a cold business. Am I right?

I fought the big fight against a cold for a few weeks but in the end the cold won. For me it has gone right into my chest and I am coughing a lot. The timing has me furious as I had a 3 day weekend and hoped to get lots done. I didn't. I napped a lot though. That was good.
The coughing leads to a sore throat and a sore chest and back. The coughing leads to peeing. I am making sure that my bladder is empty all the time in case a fit of coughing strikes. Should be fun at work today.
One of my co-workers told me to cut up an orange and put a slice across my teeth like we would as kids and just suck on it to get the juice to run down my throat and do you know what. It stopped my coughing.

She also told me to make an infusion of thyme and hot water and put that by my bed at bedtime and that would also help. I never did get around to that.

I did have to break down and get some cough syrup Friday but other than that I don't usually medicate a cold. Except for Vicks Vaporub. That I do use on my chest.

What cures do you guys use to alleviate your cold symptoms? Do they work or do you just do them because your mother did them for you when you were little?

SOCIAL MEDIA AND WORK

Maybe this should be titled Social Media OR Work. Lots going on in the news yesterday and today about whether or not people should be involved in social media sites while at the work place. Some workplaces completely block access and some embrace it.
The constant that you hear from people is that it should be okay if you just take a quick break once in a while.

Seriously? Really?

Don't any of you work with someone who is going to slack off and attend to their Facebook or Twitter pages rather than do the work they are being paid for. Do you think the boss will say Sally can use it because she doesn't abuse the privilege but Andy can't because his work is slipping. Nope. You will be doing extra work to make up for what they are ignoring.

I get paid by the hour to do a job. I show up on time, I don't take extra time on my breaks and I sure as heck don't tend to my private business during work time. C'mon people....they are paying you! Money! To work for them!

Wait until your break time to tell your BFF that her hair looked great on Friday night. Don't worry. She will still be there, likely getting paid to do a job while she tweets about her plans for that night. Text your guy about the restaurant after work not during.

What do you think? Are you responsible enough and should be able to use social media sites during your work hours? Do you own a business and think it should be grounds for dismissal or something your responsible staff can handle properly in small doses?

WHEN IS A DONATION NOT A DONATION?

I just read an article about a poor little kitten having a surgical procedure done when he started to bleed uncontrollably. The call went out to the local shelter where they found a blood donor kitty and all ended well.
Hooray for the blood donor. Now answer me this. How is it a donation when you have no choice in the matter? Mr. Shelter Kitty didn't give his blood they took it.
Now don't get me wrong. I am thrilled they could help the bleeding kitten but I get annoyed with someone who wrote an article praising the heroic blood donor.
By all means tell the story of a fairly rare occurrence of hemophilia in cats. Tell about how cats can be blood donors.
Maybe this will help Boris the shelter cat get adopted, I don't know. They will have to wait to adopt him out though as he will probably do a media tour now and be on Regis & Kelly and the View before he is ready to settle down to regular pre-hero status again.
By the way I have a cold and am cranky today. Could you tell? No?

BUCKET LISTS

Do you have a bucket list? You know what I mean. Things you would like to do in life before you kick the bucket.
What have you always wanted to do but never have? Or maybe you have done it and would like to do it again.
Some may be wild and crazy like going up into space on a shuttle or they could be as simple as being able to run a mile. You may have a list a mile long or like me have only one thing on it.
Obviously mine is to go to Italy. That is the only thing I am really hoping to do. I want to have a wonderful vacation in Italy full of vente coffees at cafe tables watching the world go by.
Juicy red wines sipped with simple platters of antipasti consisting of fresh figs, olives, salamis, cheeses and of course a loaf of crusty bread.
Fig in GeorgiaImage via Wikipedia
Visiting a vineyard, seeing the giant barrels of their wines, smelling the sour smells of fermenting grapes and of course sampling their finished products.
Sangiovese grapes in a vineyard of Montalcino,...Image via Wikipedia
Wandering through a market full of eggplants, garlic, tomatoes enjoying the smells and colours of the fresh produce. Is this a romanticized version of Italy? Of course it is but I don't care. This is the only thing in my bucket. Other things may be fun or nice but if they never happen I don't care. Italy must happen.
For the moment there is only one thing in my bucket at home.

ROCK ME LIKE A HURRICANE

I love rock music. The classic stuff. The sixties stuff. I like the music that has a bit of an edge to it. Not so much the love songs and surfer music. Music with bluesy edges and soul oozing out of every note.
Eric Burdon today.Image via Wikipedia
I get my groove on to Eric Burdon, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Santana, Led Zepplin, Grace Slick, Eric Clapton and so many more. Woodstock would have been perfect for me except I was a little too young to attend... and I lived in Canada...and it was almost impossible to get there....and did I mention I was 13? That year for Christmas my brother gave me the Woodstock album and I was so cool. Hendrix, Canned Heat, Arlo Guthrie, Richie Havens I could go on and on. I still have that album. No turntable to play it on but the album is just fine.
A while back I went to see Eric Burdon & the Animals locally. Oh how much fun was that. All us middle aged people mixed in with lots of 20 somethings rockin to the music.
That kind of gritty rock gets into your very being. You hear it and it takes you back in time and you feel so good.
Carlos Santana during a concert in 2005Image via Wikipedia
Tonight my BB Guy and our two sons are at a Santana concert in Vegas. It was touch and go if the concert was even going to be on due to the flu going around the band on Wednesday when they had to cancel the concert that night. The first time Santana has canceled in 40 years.
I got the phone call tonight from the concert of course. I could hear the music in the background. That guitar vibrating and wailing. The crowd screaming and I was so jealous. I wanted to be there. They have an awesome table at the concert and are just rocking their brains out.
The BB Guy mentioned something about Shakira and Beyonce sitting with them  (Shakira having just broken up with her boyfriend of many years) but I don't believe him. He is just trying to make me jealous because he knows Johnny Depp is over here with me. Did you see him fresh off the cover of Vanity Fair? Come to momma my little pirate.
Now I know he isn't a rock star but he does play the guitar and this is my fantasy so I can pick him if I want.
So tell me you wild and crazy ladies. What bands did you scream for? What concerts did you spend your hard earned babysitting money on?

BEWARE OF EMAIL HACKERS

I am sharing some very good advice here this morning. Through the internet world I have come in contact with an author named Abby P Stokes. She has a wonderful book for teaching computer skills to seniors (and those who just struggle with the whole thing) entitled Is This Thing On and she teaches classes too. I was especially interested in her book because I teach computers to seniors too.
One of the biggest things to get over with them is a fear of the whole thing but in some cases that fear is warranted.
Abby has written about email hackers before but she has just heard from someone who recently fell for this scam again.
I have received an email from a hacker before but it came to me from my husband's cousin's email address and it was a complete scam. It was very personal and could easily have been believed.
Click HERE to have a look at her article. She lists contact numbers to help you in case this happens to you or someone you know. Share the knowledge with your family and friends.
Say hi to Abby for me.

THE SUM OF OUR PARTS

Have you ever heard of the exhibits showing the human body peeled down to its basic components? The ones where the skin is removed showing the sinew, the tissue, the muscles, the nervous system.
I have never seen them in person though they have visited our area.
In Manitoba a human rights lawyer has requested the courts seize the exhibition to stop it from leaving until the provenance can be proven. He feels the bodies may be those of political prisoners from China and that they were not obtained with consent.
The exhibit was already banned from Seattle because of the concerns over how these bodies were obtained.
What do you think? Would you go and see an exhibit like this one? I find it fascinating and very educational but the thought that the bodies were not obtained with consent opens up such a huge can of worms. It would seem to me that this would open up the market of bodies from illegal sources.

I HAVE BEEN ANCESTOR APPROVED - AGAIN

Thank you to Jenn at Roots and Stones for thinking of me. As I have received this award before I will just link to my list that was previously done. If you would like to read it then click here
Thanks as well to Kathy Reed from Family Matters for telling me I would have been at the top of her list had I not received it already from Jenn. That is a lovely thing to hear.

MY HEART IS BROKEN

Today is a bad day. Today is the day that we had our beautiful black lab, Maxine put down. Maxine was almost 14 years old and has been having a rough time this past year steadily deteriorating.
Maxine has had an amazing, fun life.
We remembered how as a puppy she jumped up in my BB Guys lap and stole the Subway sandwich right out of his mouth. Well let me tell you that never happened again.
We remembered how she would pin our son on the ground with her big barreled chest with her paws on either side of his head so he couldn't move and she would lick his face while he laughed so hard he couldn't catch his breath.
We remembered how she actually smiled while riding in the boat while my BB guy was fishing.
We remembered how she stopped barking at the doorbell at a very young age... as soon as she realized that sometimes that doorbell meant there was pizza at the door.
We remembered how she would try to push me off the bed at the cabin during the night because it was actually her bed up there and she didn't think I should be in it. It was for her and the BB Guy.

Our hearts are just broken and we can't stop crying but she really had a good life and we owed it to her to make the hardest decision of our lives and let her go.

RINGADING DING

Hope you all had a happy New Year.
We went to the cabin with some friends. Well my BB Guy (Big Burly Guy for the new readers) was already at the cabin but he came back on the 31st. to pick us up and take us back there.
The day started out like this. My BB Guy took this on his way to get us.
While I was taking this picture from home through the front window.
It was a clear cold day. However it was considerably colder where he came from than where I was. Can you say -25 below. I know!!!

So off we went to the cabin, a 3 hour drive. My coffee buddy Earl gave me a bottle of brandy to fortify me for the drive up. It was a joke. I don't drink in the car even if I am not driving. But that brandy did come in handy one day by the fire. The roads were clear thankfully. I am always scared on the drive and I was really hoping for no snow or ice on the roads. So far so good.
We started out our evening with some ice cold champagne. It went well with the ice cold body I had. Once again we went somewhere in the middle of winter without my coat and boots. To see the last time this happened click here. I can't blame him this time though because I walked right by them at the front door myself. So here I was at the cabin in -25 degree weather without my winter coat or boots. I got to wear my guys size 13 boots and his snowmobile jacket. I was still freezing outside. I put on more layers. I was still cold. I had 2 hoods on. I was still cold. I got frostbite on my cheeks and jawline. I am not an outdoors girl...
One of the locals had created an outdoor curling rink on the street. They had a huge bonfire going and many congregated there. I wasn't there for long before my feet in my size 13 boots slipped out from under me and BAM down I went. Smacked my head really hard on the ice and gave myself a nasty whiplashed neck and back. Spilled my wine everywhere. The snow and ice looked like a killing field full of blood but it was all red wine. No blood at all not even a bump but oh man am I sore in my neck and back.
So this is the last thing I took a picture of that night.
They used milk jugs frozen with water as the curling rocks. The local dogs were having fun with them too.
Remember.... -25 degrees. The locals didn't seem to notice that it was cold out.
Well that is what I did for New Years. Knocked myself senseless on the ice in sub zero temperatures. How about you? What did you guys do?
