MY TEACHER - MY GRANDFATHER

Lori says: I am posting this entry for the Writer's Challenge for a friend. I am so glad he is participating because I always enjoy reading his thoughts on life. I know you will enjoy him too. Amman has a most interesting blog called just a thought. He is a deep thinker and when I read his blog it always gets me thinking. We are posting this here for now because it will be part of a series that is starting in February on his blog. We are getting the sneak preview here.

My Teacher, My Grandfather

My grandfather was the smartest, most well read person I’ve ever known. I had the great privilege to live with him for a little over two years in my pre-teens in India. He died a few years ago but he is now more of an influence on me through death than ever before. I see him in myself now more than ever before. Actually I never really saw him in myself until I stopped neglecting my love for writing about 5 years ago.

He was a college professor, he taught English literature. He would eventually become principal of his college. Literature was his passion, my grandmother was his love. He would read every single day. I would play around him while he sat in the veranda reading and constantly underlining. Only his family and close students knew what a truly loving person he really was. To an outsider he might’ve seemed somewhat stern, rigid and maybe even cold. And truthfully he could be all three at times, actually, most of the time, but we all knew of his soft side that peeked out of its shell at the most unexpected moments. He had an air of importance about him. He would be in a tie and sweater vest by six a.m., even on Sundays when he wouldn’t even leave the house. He was a loner, a solitary man by choice. He preferred the company of books to men. There were very few people outside of family that he would happily sit with. Sometimes he would have visitors, like minded men. They would sit in his library, drink whiskey, laugh and talk. No one dared opened that door to hear what they were laughing and talking about, not that any of us would get it anyway. They would sit and drink and talk in there well past my bed time. He viewed most of mankind to be beneath him. Those around him felt that way too. He bored easy among company (aside from his friends mentioned above). But he always stuck around for the whiskey. He was very well respected by everyone. No one ever questioned him. No one ever raised their voice towards him, except my grandmother, the only one that wasn’t scared of him. The man was barely over five feet tall and still seemed larger than life. He wasn’t intimidating per se but he had an aura of authority. He only spoke if necessary and made sure his point was succinct and clear. He was a mystery to me. I would sneak into his library when he wasn’t home and snoop around every nook and cranny trying to solve this mystery. All I really found were words I was too young to understand. I wanted to be intelligent like him.

As you can imagine, school came first with my grandfather. I never had a problem with that, I was always somewhere in the top three of my class. This was not enough for him. He would make me read text books during the summer so I had a head start when the school year started. He wasn’t Christian but made me read the children’s version of the bible for the life lessons. He sneered at the idiotic Bollywood movies I loved so much and would show me old Charlie Chaplin movies and Laurel and Hardy and old Hindi movies. Even my illiterate grandmother would surprise me with the occasional English or her understanding something I said to my grandfather in English. She obviously learnt from my grandfather. All these things that I hated at that time I would come to appreciate later in life. Seems we all go through something like that with our parents or in this case my grandparents.

I went back to India about five years ago. It would be the last time I saw my grandfather. He was old and seemed a foot shorter. He didn’t talk much and didn’t care if I did but he wanted me in his immediate vicinity as much as possible. He showed me some of his sketches (I think my grandfather would’ve rather been a sketch artist like I a musician). They were good but there was a definite recurring theme, lone cabins in the woods, the solitary wolf, untouched forests… go figure. I now think this might have to do with the love of his life being fatally ill for over twenty years and being completely helpless to do anything about it but watch her wither away. But I didn’t know him before this so I can’t say for sure. When I left a month later I took a little piece of his library with me. I’ve been collecting from it ever since. Whenever a relative goes to India I look forward to the books from his personal library that they bring me back. He literally had thousands of books. (He donated 2000 to his college to give you an idea.) A couple of months before his passing I called him on a whim requesting to hand pick some books for me. I wouldn’t receive them until after his death. The first book I read was the biography of J. Krishnamurti. This book changed my life and much of what I write in my blog is influenced by him, Khalil Gibran and of course, my grandfather.

His library is slowly turning into mine. Fortunately he usually dated when he read them and some date as far back as the early 40s, underlined with his footnotes and all. So as you see, he is still the biggest influence on me even through death. Those books might not contain his personal words but they helped in shaping him and they are now shaping me.

MY BLOG KICKS ASS - WHO KNEW?

Michele over at Finding Trinity has given me this Kick Ass Blogger award. What a cool award. Sounds like something I would do, doesn't it? Kick someone's ass.  I haven't known Michele long so this is a great surprise. She can't take it back can she? No? Good. I will pass this to someone soon but as I type this it is 5:30 in the morning here and I don't have my glasses on. If I have just typed out gibberish I apologize. Thanks Michele.

THREE OR MORE TUESDAY - SANTA'S LAST STAND

Tam @ The Gypsy's Corner
is hosting Three or More Tuesday. I hate to be redundant but I am posting some last pictures of my Santa collection. I lost two to breakage this year courtesy of my dog...and my BB guy who gets  her tail wagging so darned fast she sounds like a helicopter taking off.
Last count puts them at 98. There are a few missing in the pictures.

I have received some from friends, some from family and some I have bought for myself. I love them all but I love some a little more than others. I can't say which because it may get out.

Click on any picture to enlarge it.

MET MONDAY AND MOSAIC MONDAY - I REMEMBER WHEN

I have combined a couple of memes here today. The obvious one being Mosaic Monday hosted by Mary @ Little Red House. Not so obvious is that this is also for Metamorphosis Monday hosted by Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch.

In an email earlier today I was discussing a previous post  and that our newspapers used to come in the afternoons after school was out so the kids could deliver them. Now they are dropped off by an adult, driving a car, at about 3 in the morning. It reminded me of other changes that have gone through the years.

My youngest son who is almost 23 years old now was in a vehicle once with manual roll down windows. He had never seen them before and didn't know how to put down the window. We were amazed. It never occurred to us that in his lifetime he had only seen power windows.

Our other son is almost 27. He was fascinated by the fact that our old vinyl records had music on both sides of them unlike the cds of his generation with all the music on the one side.

We have also had great changes is other areas. Fingerprints though still used are not nearly as valuable as DNA is. Did you know rabbit ears are making a comeback?  I wonder if we can still use the remote control though.
Not only do our phones travel with us now they are also capable of doing things that our computers do too.
As for the last metamorphosis in the mosaic...well some earlier versions work a little better than the new ones do.

HAPPY 101 AWARD

Either everyone has run out of blog friends to give these to or I am a very lucky blogger. I was given this award by three different people yesterday.
Bill West @ West in New England , Frances @ Branching Out Through The Years and Becky @ Grace & Glory . Now technically Becky awarded this to me on my other site Stories of My Ancestors but I will be lazy and write one post to put on both my sites.
As it usually goes with these awards we are required to tell something of ourselves and to pass them on to others. This list is 10 things that make me happy. I will skip over the obvious ones of  family and friends and try to come up with some different ones.
  1. I am happy when the dog does not pee on the floor in front of company.
  2. I am happy when I am not stopped by a train while on my way to coffee group. This is a bone of contention in our community. I mean I am talking my first cup of coffee for the day here. Move it.
  3. I am happy when my husband remembers to call after a day of snowmobiling in the mountains to tell me they made it back to the cabin safely. Maybe I should be more worried about getting a phone call in the morning after all these guys have been back at the cabin for the night to make sure they survive the evening festivities.
  4. I am happy that my sisters can sing just as well as I do. Read this any way you like.
  5. I am happy when I hear a basketball bouncing either on pavement or in a gym. I don't get that nearly enough anymore.
  6. I am happy it doesn't snow often here in the Vancouver area. We are not supposed to get much snow here but last year was a doozy, snowing every day for over a month. So far this year we are good. Abnormally high temperatures here yesterday.
  7. I am happy that I have tall people in my house to reach things for me. Second shelf is too high for me. Of course if these tall people would put things where I can reach them I wouldn't need their help. Hey...it occurs to me that all the alcohol is in the cupboard above the fridge. What's up with that?
  8. I am happy that I am such a good driver because everyone else out there drives like an idiot.
  9. I am happy that I have so many unfinished projects in my life because I will have to live forever to get them done.
  10. I am happy that my family and friends actually know how crazy weird I am and they still love me. I know this because they all emailed me a warning when the government announced they were going to lock up all the crazy weird people in the city. "Run little buddy, run" was what they all said.
Now I am supposed to pass this on to 10 people. Yikes. So many of you don't post awards. Let me think. I try not to tag the same people over and over again. I will have to stop my list at 8 today. If you prefer not to join in just know that you were thought of.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU SHAKE YOUR HEAD

This list came to me in an email and I don't know if they are true or not, except for number 7 which I have seen with my own eyes. Number 1 is from the Darwin Awards. Have you ever read those books?

1. When his 38 caliber revolver failed to fire at his intended victim during a hold-up in Long Beach, California would-be robber James Elliot did something that can only inspire wonder. He peered down the barrel and
tried the trigger again. This time it worked.

2. The chef at a hotel in Switzerland lost a finger in a meat cutting machine and after a little shopping around, submitted a claim to his insurance company. The company expecting negligence sent out one of its men to have a look for himself. He tried the machine and he also lost a finger. The chef's claim was approved.

3. A man who shoveled snow for an hour to clear a space for his car during a blizzard in Chicago returned with his vehicle to find a woman had taken the space. Understandably, he shot her.

4. After stopping for drinks at an illegal bar, a Zimbabwean bus driver found that the 20 mental patients he was supposed to be transporting fromHarare to Bulawayo had escaped. Not wanting to admit his incompetence, the driver went to a nearby bus stop and offered everyone waiting there a freeride.. He then delivered the passengers to the mental hospital, telling the staff that the patients were very excitable and prone to bizarre fantasies.. The deception wasn't discovered for 3 days.

5. An American teenager was in the hospital recovering from serious head wounds received from an oncoming train. When asked how he received the injuries, the lad told police that he was simply trying to see how close he could get his head to a moving train before he was hit.

6. A man walked into a Louisiana Circle-K, put a $20 bill on the counter, and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which the clerk promptly provided. The man took the cash from the clerk and fled, leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he got from the drawer...$15. [If someone points a gun at you and gives you money, is a crime committed?]

7. Seems an Arkansas guy wanted some beer pretty badly.. He decided that he'd just throw a cinder block through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinder block and heaved it over his head at the window.. The cinder block bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. The liquor store window was made of Plexiglas. The whole event was caught on videotape.

8. As a female shopper exited a New York convenience store, a man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately, and the woman was able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes the police apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back to the store.. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied, "Yes, officer, that's her. That's the lady I stole the purse from."

9. The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan at 5 A.M., flashed a gun, and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man, frustrated, walked away.

10. When a man attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a Seattle street, he got much more than he bargained for.. Police arrived at the scene to find a very sick man curled up next to a motor home near spilled sewage. A police spokesman said that the man admitted to trying to steal gasoline, but he plugged his siphon hose into the motor home's sewage tank by mistake. The owner of the vehicle declined to press charges saying that it was the best laugh he'd ever had.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE, READ ALL ABOUT IT

We are all so computer involved now. It is such a part of our regular life. We get our news online, our information for where to eat, what is going on in our neighborhoods all online.
When we need a job or need to hire someone. Yup, to the computer.
I get regular updates of my small town local paper on Twitter along with my provincial newscast updates, Canadian news and CNN.
We only get the daily newspaper because my husband likes to read it before he goes to work.
Now I hear that Canwest Global Communications Corp. has sought bankruptcy protection.
They publish 12 daily newspapers. This includes the Vancouver Sun which has been around as long as I can remember. They are trying to sheild themselves from their creditors until they can  refinance some debt and restructure their operations.
This is the biggest media company in Canada.
Not only do they supply our main newspaper each day but Global is one of the main television news programs with morning, noon, dinner time and eleven o'clock new program every day.
So now what? Have we caused the demise of the printed word by embracing the world wide web?
Do you read the daily newspaper? What will we line the bird cages with if they go under?

Hey don't go yet...did you leave me a note?
