YOU OLD PRUNE

Another new study out there for us to be happy about.

Studies have shown that post menopausal women who eat dried plums, also known as prunes, have considerably lower risk of developing osteoporosis or fractures in comparison to women of the same age who don’t eat them.

Though all fruits and vegetables have a good effect on our bodies the consumption of the prune/plums are far above the others in increasing bone density.

A team from Florida State and Oklahoma State Universities tested two groups of women, 90 in total for one year.

Group 1 (55 women)consumed 100 grams of dried plums, equivalent to about 10 prunes per day along with 500 mgs. of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D daily.

The control group (34 women) consumed 100 grams of apples per day plus the same calcium and vitamin D as the first group.

The first group had considerably greater bone mineral density in the ulna and spine compared to group 2.

This is a really good thing because if you are eating that many prunes in a day you had better be able to get up those stairs the bathroom in a hurry.

    Ok I wish that sounds more like my belly laugh that erupted when I read that last line, but really Lori!!!

    So true though, could you imagine the women at the lab. "you want me to WHAT?"

    Prunes are super high in prebiotics also. Maybe another reason why they, ummmm go far.

  8. Well,I take the calcium and the vitamin D plus several other pills ,I also take prune juice in the morning,but not for the arthritis.!!!
    Very amusing and informative post.

  9. There used to be a commercial for prunes on TV that said, "Prunes! Are 3 enough? Are 6 too manty" My husband still quotes that spot ... for all sorts of situations.

    I like prunes, but don't really eat them anymore -- maybe I'm afraid I'll end up LOOKING like one.

  12. This is good news for me as I'm one of the few prune lovers out there. I always have them on hand and will occasionally munch on them. (I usually one do 2-3 though, not 10!). And I always have my large, economy sized bottle of emergency prune juice --- for those times when I've eaten too many bananas, drunk too much coffee or imbibed too much the night before. No nasty laxatives for me!

    Prunes! Wonder fruit for the decade!!
