OUTDOOR WEDNESDAY: WELL IT CAME FROM OUTDOORS

Now although these pictures were taken indoors they are of some things still growing in my garden even though our weather has definitely turned to fall.
It was Canadian Thanksgiving this past weekend so of course there had to be turkey on the table. I went into the garden to see how my herbs were doing and I was delighted that they were in perfect shape still.
I picked some regular Sage and this pretty variegated one. In the heat of the summer it has much more yellow in it but darkens up a bit when the nights cool down. Some of these Sage leaves were about two inches long.
I picked some of the herb flowers to put in a vase. These pretty purples are from a big bunch of Oregano.
Next I picked a bunch of Thyme stalks. They are so fragrant. I have lemon Thyme also but didn't want that in my turkey stuffing. I'll save it for some roasted chickens.
My mother in law introduced me to this last herb. It is called Borage. I don't use it in cooking though but the flowers are so pretty. It can grow to be 4 feet tall and gets pretty floppy but these little stars are great for decorating a plate or freezing in an ice cube.

Doesn't sage remind you of Lambs Ear (a pretty plant that has wooly leaves~don't know the real name)? I have never grown Borage but there it goes...see! Into my herb garden next spring. I am in love with the blue flowers.
ReplyDeleteI am a terrible photo taker but I picked up 2 tips that aided me tremendously: Never use the flash, turn it off and use natural light. Use the macro setting for close ups (it looks like a little flower). And a last one: stand back and zoom in on things if they are turning out blurry.

Happy belated Thanksgiving. You have a wonderful collection of herbs. I have grown spearment which I like in iced tea and sweet basil which we make into pesto or caprise salad and parsley. I think I may expand my herbs to some more. You have given me some to consider. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI have all the same herbs growing in pots except for the borage. I also have rosemary, which I've learned to take inside for thr winter as it will stay regenerate in the spring like the sage and thyme will. I love the smell of fresh herbs! Happy Outdoor Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteO.K. I'll admit up front I'm envious. By the time our holiday rolls around my herbs will be lying on the ground and I'll be cussin' because I have to buy them. I hope you had a wonderful holiday.

I can smell the Sage. We always dry some for winter use.
ReplyDeleteHey...Happy Thanksgiving Lori! I've been out of the loop lately...too many late night working and no time for blog reading. You have a great selection of herbs. I planted some this year, but was too busy to tend to them. Only the hearty will survive until next spring.

ReplyDeleteI love that you are so smart to grow your own herbs ! I would have no idea what is what ! I do love using herbs but....mine is in those bottles from the store.....I tend to kill plants...oh well - I can't be perfect....LOL !
