Joining Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch for Tablescape Thursday is the highlight of the week for many bloggers and you can see why. Amazing tables everywhere and I bet with fall upon us now you will see many great fall decorations on those tables.
I am using a tablescape from somebody else. Mrs. Gail Borden of Chicago has set a lovely table. Or at least one of her servants did.
It seems that Mrs. Borden is a chic round-the-world traveler and a much sought after member of Chicago's North Shore set. She says she enjoys entertaining at home.
"I love having friends in for dinner." And since her friends include artists, musicians, and literary figures, her dinners are always great fun. One of her thoughtful table touches is the serving of Camel cigarettes...
"My guests prefer Camels." she points out..........etc.
You can see her maid has the camera ready for taking a pic of the table for our meme. (I don't think it is a camera). I see lovely silver candle sticks. She probably paid full price at a chic store. No Ebay for this world traveler. Do you recognize the china pattern? Looks like it will be a three course meal. I wonder what they are having?
If you enlarge the picture by clicking on it you will see a list of names of other importantly chic women who also smoke Camels.
A very interesting tablescape. Of course the host or hostess would provide cigarettes for their guests. It's been so long since I've seen any cigarette advertisements in magazines or television. They've been banned here in Canada for many years. But I do remember the slogans from my youth: 'I'd walk a mile for a Camel'. It was a very effective ad campaign.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of bittersweet memory for me. My father died of COPD (from smoking) 8 months ago.
Goodness - how old is this ad -- It's almost shocking now to see the smoking ads now - isn't it? I did notice one of the guests was from Virginia.
ReplyDeleteThis is just a great old ad. They really knew how to make smoking look glamorous. The table in the picture was very pretty too.

Very clever, fun post. She had an elegant home, but it still smelled of tar and nicotine. :)
ReplyDeleteOh Lorie this is so funny...I so remember all the cigs ads we use to have...My step-dad smoked Camels I can remember that like it was yesterday...hey everyone use to smoke then...and always had an after dinner Cig...great post...Now don't even get me started on Roman that's one sicko...May you have a great day...hugs and smiles Gl♥ria
ReplyDeleteClever idea for TT. Breaks up to monotony (sp?) of all those pretty tables waiting for plain old company to arrive.
ReplyDeleteA discussion about the show Mad Men was taking place on another blog and how it seemed just about every scene involves smoking. The show is sset in the sixties. It is such a shame that that generation did not get warned of the dangers. Just a bit too late to those people who already were addicted.

This is so funny. Just think, at one time this was really serious. lol Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteAh, more puffs per pack! LOL, Lori this was great.
ReplyDeleteDid you see her waist..Coffee and ciggies , kept them trim...and coughing! :)
I love old ads! I keep a collection of National Geographics (going back to the 30's) just so I can look at the ads. Really good, Lori!

I found this post fascinating! Cigarettes were really a sign of sophistication and popularity back them. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteAin't life grand?
ReplyDeleteWhen you're addicted to cancer sticks.
Wow.
These old ads are something else.
Was there a tablescape? I didn't notice.
I was overwhelmed with the fact that I'm missing out on bad breath and stained teeth.
Man, I suck.
Hi Lori! Long time no visit! What a table and I agree, I haven't seen ads like that. Perfect hair, even the maid! ;-)
ReplyDeleteInteresting TT post. Wow, it is a beautiful table but oh my those cigerettes. My father in law smoked Camels and died of lung cancer about 28 years ago. He was in his mid 60's. My mother died of lung cancer 20 years ago and she too was a smoker and was only 61 when she passed. Thankfully I gave up smoking when was diagonosed.

Hi Lori...
ReplyDeleteGirl, you're always sooo much fun! Love this post you did for TT!!! Hehe! I really do have fun looking at these old ads...it truly speaks of "days gone by"...doesn't it? Thanks for sharing it with us today!!!
Warmest wishes,
Chari
And she felt so chic there with her cigarette held aloft. Now she would look indulgent in this day and age! Neat idea!
