CABIN STORIES: Moonscape

I don't know who would plant something in the dry, dusty lifeless soil between the roots of a large tree. This rhubarb plant was here when we bought the cabin. We just left it there the first year and do you know what. This sucker gets to be about 5 feet tall without being taken care of in the slightest. I am not usually up there so it is up to my BB guy to handle it and he gardens on the "ya whatever" school of thought. I have told him that this year he needs to pick some before it is the size of a grown man's thigh. Then I can use it in some of the yummy recipes I have seen on your sites.

  1. Now I've got that odd little jingle about beebopareebop rhubarb pie that Garrison Keillor sings on Prairie Home Companion.

    Where's my baby, where'd she go
    I asked her friends but they don't know
    So I got me a piece of rhubarb pie
    And here comes my baby strollin by

    I know my baby loves rhubarb, rhubarb

  2. Nutshell Berry: That is a catchy one. Pie crust is not one of my talents no matter who's recipe or hints I use. I'm thinking Crisps.

  3. Oh rhubarb! One of my all time favorites. I was shopping for rhubarb when i went into labor with my 2nd kid -- wouldn't leave the farmstand till I'd bought the rhubarb!

    I like to just "stew" it and have it warm over cold vanilla ice cream. Heaven.

  4. Cass: That is how my mom did it. Stewed. Usually no ice cream though :{

  6. Blondie: I seen it in muffins, crisps, cakes, chutneys. Oooh the possibilities if he will only get it picked in time.

  8. My good friend and roommate from college is also into writing about rhubarb....what is it about rhubarb this week....lol I have a plant in my garden that also grows by the "ya whatever" school of thought. It gets SO large that it just tips over mid summer covering the other better tended to perennials. Maybe I need to move it. It's a gigantic garden leader. BTW--I love your posts and especially enjoy reading your feedback to mine!

  9. Lindalee: Well it is just that time of year isn't it. What is that saying? I hope the rain won't hurt the rhubarb. Yeah right. Kryptonite can't even hurt the rhubarb.
    Keetha: You can check out the Cabin Stories from my archives. I hope for more when the weather is better.
